Seized universal steering joint
Nearly there with my Indy but when moving it around the other day I found that the lower universal joint that joins column to rack is seized solid.
Also found that the column was too far through it and fouling the lower part of the joint. So I need to replace the joint but have only found escort
grp4 ones on Rally Design or 36 splines 9/16ths ones on CBS.
Can anyone advise if either of those will work. Local motor factors were no use. Would rather buy new than scrat for a second hand one somewhere.
Still available from Ford?
Edited to add I have a shortened Sierra rack and I am sure the column is Sierra as well. Its all been modified/sleeved.
Cheers
Rich

Sorry the joint I am talking about connects the splined input in the steering rack to the column/shaft which is also splined.
Looks like this

The rack and column were on the car when I bought it as a rolling chassis.
Where is the rubber ring?

If it is a metal uj, check first that it is not at to sharp an angle thus locking up, if not soak it in WD40, it should free up.

I've soaked it in oil for 2 days and it moves but hell its very stiff still. Haven't tried any heat yet. Its such an important part I
would prefer to replace it. Its been sat there for 2 years and hardly turned.
Anyone know where to source one other than a Sierra? Is it a std Sierra part?

The Sierra uses a horrible flexy rubber coupling. An escort group 4 UJ (either pressed or forged type) should be fine, assuming the extension between
your steering column and the rack has the standard spline fitting on the end.

mine was stiff, soaked it then wobbled it and added lots more wd40. The wobbling action slowly freed it off and its fine now.
(wobbling = keep turning and twisting it, not too much force, as it starts to move keep doing it and lubricate)
