Propshaft extension adaptor

Quick question:

is it Ok to get a small adaptor made up to bridge the gap between an existing propshaft and a new gearbox? I've seen the odd one about, but wondered if there's a maximum distance after which its not safe to do so? I'm talking about a gap of around 150mm or so. Existing prop has a sliding joint built in (4 bolt flange end) but the new gearbox is a 3 prong job..and shoter!

I would personley get the prop adapted right to fit the new position, and not muck about with adapters, i doubt the cost factor would be very different
