spring length for 13" shock

It has been recommended that 8" long springs go with 13" dampers. Would 7" ones be way too short, or would it work, in a pinch? Are shims a good idea?

Would anybody like to trade the following:

4 x 350 lb x 7", for 2 x 250 x 8", and 2 x 350 lb x 8"??

Or trade my 11" long Protech's, with 6" 300 lb springs, for 13" units. I also have 4 x 8" x 600 lb springs, which are excellent for drifting, if that's what you like.

It depends on the closed length of the shock and what the coil bound length of the spring is.

To work out the solid length of a 'normal' spring (closed and gound flat for 270°)

Wire diameter X (Total no of coils - 0.5)
