Locost Shock/Damper Length
After brief search here, found this thread -http://www.locostbuilders.co.uk/viewthread.php?tid=169760. This gives some background info.
What is "standard" or norm(?) for clearance dimension between lower chassis rail and ground? Was wondering if I could change my shock
units for longer ones, to increase ground clearance. Front shocks are set at 12", on Locost type chassis. Upper mount is welded under top
rail.
What do other Locosters have for their shock/damper lengths?

I went through this too, after hitting the ground with my oil pan, once too often, with distastrous results. MK is 12" dampers on the front,
standard, and can't recall what the rears are; probably the same. Catervans have something like 14" on the back.
You can buy extensions from Westfield, as well as eyebolt extensions from ProTech, which give you an extra 20 mm or so. Make sure you get the proper
springs with the correct length, as well as inside diameter and rate. You'll probably need to experiment with springs; they aren't that
expensive to change around regularly.
There are standard ride heights posted on the Westfield owners site. Most people report that the back should be 10 - 15 mm higher.
Sorry, I may not be helpful, partially because every one is different from another with these. You'll have to do a bit of digging to find out
where you want to start, when it comes to ride height.
Search on 1. WSCC
2. ProTech
3. Westfield's own site
ps. I also went with 15" wheels, replacing the 13's, due to lack of ground clearance. MUCH less worry for the road.

Hi
Typical dimensions for a locost. If running on 185/60/13 then you would require Front- 12 1/2" open length Rear 13" open length. This
would or should give you a range of 3 3/4 " - 4 1/4" front ride height measured under the front chassis rail and 4 1/4" - 4
3/4" ride height measured under the chassis just in front of the rear wheels.
It will also depend on exactly how the damper bodies have been built as to exactly how much travel the dampers have also taking into account what size
bump stops are fitted. It's never straight forwards but if you would like a chat re how to gain exact measurements required Etc just give me a
call in the workshop.
Cheers Matt 0121 3503258.

Thanks Matt. That's a very comprehensive, and useful reply.
Thanks also to RK, for useful tips. Am already on 14" Rimstock (ex-Westie) wheels, with 185 tyres.

Checked ride height - Rear 5", Front 4 1/4" to 4 1/2". Seems to reasonably in line with your figures, bearing in mind the 14"
wheels.
