the diff plot thickens guys!
right.went up to the garage to check the diff over tonight.
its definately 7" with push in fitment.
driveshafts are push in at both ends.
but if i jack it up and turn a wheel both wheels rotate same way, and if i lock the input shaft the wheels will not turn at all. they arent just
tight,they wont rotate!
this seems to tell me that it is after all a 7" lsd with push in shafts? if i take the diff out over the weekend i will remove the back and see
what internals i have. i was told that quaife were the only place you could get a push type 7" lsd so is this the case?

Sounds like a welded open diff to me!

have you driven with it fitted? I'd have thought you would notice if it was welded - but it certainly sounds like it is! An LSD should still
allow you to turn them seperately. Id be tempted to chock one rear wheel on the ground, jack up the other side and attempt to turn it with a good bar
on a socket.

cheers snapper.i put a thread on pistonheads in caterham section and the link came up. ap suretrac,zf,quaife, trans x all made lsds for caterham
7" diffs,as caterham didnt use the ford lsd,and just used the casing so hopefully ive got one of those. im sure i could have turned the wheel if
i had help holding input flange. but its not easy when alone. cheers

Not a chance that its welded. If you have driven a welded diff car on the road you would know about it, trust me.

the ZF diffs were going for quite alot of money at one point (they've not been made for a while now
)
I guess the only way to find out exactly is to take the back cover off and have a look....
just be warned, if its a plate style LSD the additives in the oil can be really, really smelly - the sort of smell that hangs around for months

thanks merc. spoke to phil at road race transmissions and he said the zf lsd was the norm for a caterham of mines age and hes sure thats what it will
be. you have to look through the diff when drive shafts removed to tell which lsd is inside, i found the link on mycaterham. good info on there
