Squeaky noise

Hi all
I get the squeaky noise from the front of my car it is like slipping belt , but the fan belt is pretty tight, this happens when I am doing above 60 MPH . I let car free roll the noise is still there I have checked everything nothing is loose. I am wondering if I need to have more air vent on the bonnet and maybe this is just a air flow magnify itself at that speed.

Has anyone else had the same problem, do I need to create air vent on the bonnet?

I get a squeak / whistle from a tiny gap under my wind deflector.

Is it a wheel bearing that needs adjusting or replacing?

Probably not this but have you recently fitted a new fan belt? I have had a squeeky type sound coming from particular designs of fan belt in the past, usually those toothed type ones.

When you say the belt is 'pretty tight', how tight is that? My donor MX5 sounded like it had a slipping belt, turned out the belt was actually too tight. It might sound daft but loosening it slightly brought it back to normal.

It could also be a contaminated belt, it doesn't matter how tight or loose it is if the belt or pulleys have been in contact with oil.

Thank you both for the reply , the fan belt has been cleaned it was tightened gradually so it did not slip at thick over. I have tightened it so it can turn less 90 degree and yes it the flat type.

If it still does it with the car free wheeling surely it can't be the belt?

Try driving it with the bonnet off,see if the noise is still there

Hi
Thanks for your reply.
I have tried that the noise does go away , but I do still hear slightly that makes me think the noise vanish because the wind at that speed is masking , what do you think?

Can you try blanking off the nose cone and driving it for a short while?

Will just be a case of eliminating where the air is making the noise.

Have you got any type of seal/foam tape etc where bonnet sits on the nosecone?

I'd double check the bearing tightness if you haven't already. I tightened my rear bearing up and got rid of a squeak.

Thanks for the reply,
I have already done that, the noise is from the engine bay. If I break the noise does not go till the speed has dropped below 50 MPH. I think I will have to take it to a rolling road.

very bizarre !

you sure you aren't just over worrying? RR will be a lot of money to deal with a squeak. you hear everything in these cars.

Can you establish if the noise is engine-speed related, or car speed related? I have seen many folks fight with squeaky belts only to be told it was the exhaust manifold gasket that had failed. This would be an engine-speed dependant noise.

Hi there
Thanks for the reply very interesting, I had to think about this carefully. Yes the noise happens when I am at above 60 mph and noise is a bit like a squeaky belt.

However I checked round the exhaust manifold could not sign of smoke I also checked the gap with filler gauge there was no gap anywhere.
I had to tighten one of the bolts on the manifold,I have not manged to take out the car out for a drive yet.
As for the engine speed dependent noise could this be anything else as this started to become noticeable when the car was back on the road this year?

Thanks again
