Stuck Bleed Nipples
My mate asked my to look at his brakes for him on his AX.
When i went to bleed the calipers one nipple had been snapped off and the other side was rounded. I managed to bleed most of the system by taking the
flexi off and bleed that far, but there will still be air in the caliper.
His brakes were absolutely shocking when he brought it to me, he had taken it to a garage and they said it was the MC and servo, i changed these and
bled the system as best i could and it has improved a bit but still not very safe.
What is the best way to get a broken bleed nipple out? Or to free up a rounded one?
If its going to be too much work he said he will fork out the £70 i can get the pair of calipers for. I want to try and save him some money also i
cant guarentee him that it will completely fix the problem.

Cut the pipe off and bang a socket over the nipple???

Try drilling the bleed hole in the bleed screw to as larger size as you can and then drive in a length of hex bar cut off an allen key with a
grinder. You can now get a grip on the hex bar with a socket, if you have one small enough, or a pair of Mole grips.
Don't drill too far and damage the taper seat.
This can be done in situ but to be honest the best bet is to remove the slave cylinder from the car and do it on the bench. Strip it right down
removing all the rubber/plastic bits and give it a bit of heat which will break the rust seal. Then try as above.
At least if it doesn't work you are half way to changing it!

DON'T PUT A DRILL or EAZYOUT anywhere near it you will just end up with a scrap caliper.
The small bleed nipples on PGA groups cars particularly those with the alloy caliper option are famous for this problem --- a lot of garages
won't even try to bleed through the nipple on these models -- they also have master cylinders that cause problems when bleeding.
First problen that when bleeding the seal on this type of master cylinder dosen't seal well on the return stroke and actually draws in air past
the piston on the return stroke this makes bleed very difficult unless the master cylinder resevoir is pressureised this may well have been the
original problem.
First trick to try is dead simple remove the brake pads and pump the caliper pistons out a good bit -- make sure when doing the this that the pedal
return stroke is very very slow and the top has been removed from the master cylinder as this helps avoid the master cylinder drawing in air on the
return stroke. Then push the caliper pistons back and refit the pads -- doing this should force any air in the calipers out through the
master cylinder.
If it dosen't work the first time try again but unbolting the caliper and turning it so the pipe connection is at the very top.
If that still dosen't work you will have to pressure bleed through the flexi first and try again.

when i had a stuck nipple on the back of my scrief (sierra drums), i welded a 4 foot bar onto the broken remains. i think it was more the heat than
the leverage that sorted it, but either way it worked well. Managed to reuse the old nipple too!
make sure that heat wont damage the internals too much though...
