Sierra Diff back plate

Damn. I have to grind off the rear mounting point on my sierra LSD to get it into my chassis. Guess what I've gone and done. Can the hole be patched up in any reliable way (I can't weld and don't want to learn). Are all sierra diff back plates the same? If so, Can I bolt one on from another diff? Does anyone have an old diff (an non-working one say) ?

I did this too. I just took the diff down to a local garage to be welded up.

Tip for those who need to cut off the rear mounting lug on their sierra diff:

cut from the top at about 45° towards the back. Don't cut down vertically!
Cut a little off at a time.

There is enough meat on the back plate to drill and tap 2 holes and put a plate over the hole, with a suitable adhesive to make it oil tight. will this be good enough? does the diff get hot? is PU adhesive or epoxy attacked by oil?

cheers for the tip! i might have to do this soon!

im building an RT and havent got round to fitting the dif yet, but visually i reckon that rear mount should be above the round bar at the rear.. is this not the case?

or does it need trimmed to actually get the thing in there?

oh ive just noticed your using an LSD, does this differ in shape to a 3.36 open diff?

My diff had a big aluminium boss sticking out of the rear at the top with two threaded holed in it for mounting bolts. The diff has to go in nose first from underneath. This boss fouls on the lower chassis rail. I looked to see where the boss touched the diff and cut downwards from there. Mistake. Because the diff goe in nose up at an angle, an angled cut is sufficient to clear the chasis rail. Probably.
