Wishbones/Brackets/Bushes
I am building a locost inspired midi. For the front suspension, I am using Metro uprights with a fixed, tapered hole for the top mount. This means
that castor/camber adjustment will have to be carried out at the inboard end. As I have been given some bearings with threaded tubes, i plan to use
these. My questions are as follows:
1: Orientation - I have seen three versions - rose joints parallel to wishbone arms (easy to make, difficult to adjust?), joints at 90 degrees to car
(camber by winding in/out, caster with washers/spacers) or 1 joint at 90 degrees to car, the other parallel so one adjusts camber, 1 does castor. I
would appreciate opinions on which is correct/best.
2: In 'THE' book, the brackets are 3mm thick. In High sppeed low cost, the brackets are 16g (but bent to increase strength). Which is
recommended? Do rose joint brackets 'clamp' the centre of the joint like a poly bush, or do they pivot about the mounting bolt.
3: Finally(!), I was planning to use rose joints on the top wishbone, poly bushes for the bottom. Will this cause problems?
Apologies for the multi-part post, look forward to the replies! JC

persoanlly i would put them at 90 degrees to car just because it would be simpler to do the brackets. you could argue that the rose joints would be
under less stress under braking if parralel to wishbone arms but in a midi the braking is less bias to the front as a front engine car and you can
alway use bigger joints anyway. up to you i suppose.
the end of the rose joints are basically a bearing so wont make much difference if you clamp it or not, it will do the same job but is probably more
stable if you do.
as for the brackets i would say 3mm would be a bit ott but 16g (about 1.5mm) is too thin, i wouldnt use less than 2mm myself unless as you say it has
other support by bending etc.
cant see any real problem with using poly and rod ends either really although just rod ends at the top may make the ride quite harsh and having poly
at the bottom may not counteract it, then depends what the car is used for i suppose. rod ends will give better feel (harsher ride) and bushes will
give a better ride but less feel through the car.

rose joints at 90 deg to the car, easier to adjust and less bending stress in the rose joint.
Brackets - 3mm. The weight is not much for the peace of mind if you hit a big pothole!
(the trailing arm brackets on the back of my grasser are 5mm and I've bent them slightly, ok I know trailing arm is a bit different but I
didn't hit anything that hard!)
