Axle / Transmission tunnel

Help !!!

I fitted the rear axle a couple of nights ago, it was sited as far over to the offside as possible, this still left the centre of the axle 12mm over to the nearside also the the end of the axle is 22mm further out than the offside. (confused I am)

I have gone through and checked my chasis measurements and all would appear fine. The transmission tunnel seems to be correct - 3.5" on the offside deacresing after 12", 2" for the nearside straight through, so that the propshaft can go right to left to pick up the gearbox.

The questions -

1. Has anyone else had this and what have they / you done.

2. I'm Using a Salisbury axle does the Timken axle have the diff offset less to the nearside ???

3. Can i extend the offside tyre out by 22mm by using spacers - seems to be a mighty big gap to fill.

4. How close to the transmission tunnel can the diff on the UJ joint be.

Help please I just cannot get my head around this.

It sure sounds like your axle is upside down

Check the location of the plastic breather in the axle casing. It should be on the top.

Do not attempt to space the offside wheel.

I have a salisbury axle from a Capri (52" between backplates) located with Nissan Bluebird rear track control arms which are adjustable and within 3mm of the
correct length. You need 4 adjustable and 1 non adjustable (each car has 2
adj and 2 non adj so you need to find 2 bluebirds!) The last adjustable one
is lengthened to make the panhard rod so you end up with fully adjustable OE
rear suspension for about £20 - and a load less effort.

You do need to seriously adjust the transmission tunnel from the book plans
on the off side to allow for the diff, I decided to loose 2" of leg room by
pulling the seats forward and splaying the tranny tunnel in this space.

If your axle is biased to the nearside, I really think you have it upside down.

Heh heh - (that was a joke right?)

Well back in the day there was perhaps a lot to LOL about on TOL, but it seems to be OK now, if a little depleted in numbers.

TOL is The Other List - the Yahoo locost group (in case that wasn't a joke).

Hi guys thanks for all your thoughts, Liam it's not a memory problem It was posted on both lists.

Axle the right way up (breather hose etc), taking out the good old grinder and rebuilding the tunnel today now with axle in place, wish I had done this the first time.
