There are lots of differing arguments here.
My take on it is
1 There are 2 differing widths 48inch and 52 inch. The escort has 48 inch and so had the early capris. The late capris and the cortinas had 52
inch.
2 There were axles in the escort/capri/cortina which loaded the diff in from the prop end and were called timken or more commonly english axles,
and all the ratios are interchangeable, but not the halfshafts as they are 1inch longer in the 52inch axle.
3 There were salisbury axles in escorts and cortinas but I'm not sure about capri's and the diffs load from the rear.
4 The atlas axle (wide)and the baby atlas axle (escort) were set up with different halfshafts (floating) and were for motor sport purposes the
better option as you could renew the shafts without having to strip the brakes etc. I think some of the 2.8 capris had them but I'm not sure.
Like i say this is my understanding only and point 4 i'm a bit unsure about but think i'm right (don't we all).
I await correction from anyone in the know.

You're certainly not far off.
No capris had floating axles as std, not even any of the 2.8's.
I think you are right about the widths.
"Atlas" axle does refer to the motorsport axle but not necessarily full floating. Exactly what the differences between a std production
capri axle and an "Atlas" axle are I'm not sure. I think the atlas is usually the reference for a capri axle where the spring seats
have been re-angled to make the prop angle suit an escort.
Most people just call capri axles atlas axles though!

English has a diff 'banjo' unit that goes in from the front. Atlas has a back cover, and crown wheel and pinion go in from the back. Full
or semi floating Atlas axles were adaptations of the standard production units. The full floating conversions are still available.
