shortened rack
I plan to use a Chevette rack and I'm in the process of shortening it. I need o chop about 4" but I see the space between the mounts is
less than 5".
Anybody who sortened a rack what is the result?
Thanks you.

Just remember the rack only needs shortening to place the knuckles on the steering arms between the wishbone mounts, otherwise you will suffer terible
bump-steer. The casting only needs shortening to get the holes to align and allow full movement of the rack. Is the Chevette rack suitable for this
purpose once this has been taken into account?
Availability of a quick rack maybe something you should consider depending on your intended vehicle use.

The height of the rack in relation to steering arm on your uprights is just as important...bump steer can be dialed out on a Locost using the Escort
rack even though the knuckles fall outside of the centre line of top and bottom 'bone pivots......so no need for cut n shut steering racks

You can dial out bump steer over a short suspension travel by tuning the rack height, but to get zero over full suspension travel you need the rack to
be the right length.
I shortened my escort rack 3.5ins but only shortened the housing 3ins 'cos I was worried about how close together the mounts would be. They
ended up 7ins apart, which actually feels quite alright when it's bolted up.
Turning circle appears OK but I've not done any road work yet!!!

First, thanks for your replies.
What I did is use a software to optimize the rack lenght to get less than 1mm of toe over the full susp. travel. Now the software dictates that my
rack should be shortened by ~4". I check this and it's very sensible but the only thing is that the rack mountings became very close to
each other with these modification.

I remember when I was looking at this I toyed with the idea of making the rack mounts bolt up & grip the rack round the bellows thing - make 2 1/2
round sections that bolt up tight onto the bellows rubber where is sits on the rack. Did it the normal way in the end though.
