What shocks and springs again Please ?

I have been searching for a few days in the archives for shock/spring info. I want to get a set so I can finish bracketing the chassis.

It’s a book build, zetec motor and live back end .The shocks on the back will bolt on using the trailing arm bolts as is with the Luego design.

From what I can gather I need 14" 175 pound rears 13" 300 pound fronts. Does this sound about right?

It’s going to be a fast Sunday afternoon blaster. So want some thing descent but not full race. Any recommendations?

A few people have recommended Protech anybody had any problems with them?

Where to buy? Any body gone direct? What was the price and service like?

Any info and recommendations welcome as I would not be able to afford to get it wrong.

Rally design advertises a set of 4 Gabriel shocks and spring for £230. Now they give good service and that’s a good price but they are shorter on the rear and front meaning I will need to make up brackets to fit on the axle as per book. Again any experience good or bad please.

All opinions and advice appreciated…

Regards warren.

Mines a xflow engined book car, !50lbs rear, 250lbs front (top mounts UNDER chassis rails). Front feels pretty much perfect, if I had to change anything I'd increase the rear rate slightly, so here your 175lbs looks pretty good.

My Protechs came from MK, haven't used them in anger yet but from a quality point of view I don't think you will be dissapointed.
As for lengths, you will have to decide on your own spec regarding where you have mounted the brackets.

Speak to Protech - if you offer to collect with cash, they may offer a better deal! They did for me!

MNR do 4 Protect with springs for about £315 inc VAT. according to their site. I've heard MK do them for similare money as well.

I'm not sure how many different sizes/lengths they other though, so you may have to position brackates to suit.

Yep, Protech shocks from MNR are £315, goe mine from them, very fast service, superb quality, spot on.

Springs wise, think you are a tad high with the rates there.

With the Vauxhall XE engine I am using 275lb on the front and 140 lb on the rear.

KEEP IT SOFT FOR THE ROAD!!!

far too many locosts are too stiffly sprung in the best of Chav Tuning fashions.

Just give them a call, they are very helpful, and will do protech shocks to whatever length you require, in either 1.9 or 2.25" platform, rose jointed or bushed, 12mm or 1/2" hole and they are fully adjustable platform and valving (well, single adjustable but so is everything else on a sensible budget i.e. less than £200 each) anyway so should fit the bill!!!

Have a look here:

http://www.shock-absorbers.co.uk/find_coilover.aspx

Gaz shocks in pretty much any size you like. £80 each, so work out a similar price to the protechs.

.................Yes, but bear in mind the Gaz ones are steel, the Protech ones are machined from billet aluminium and are much lighter!!!!

For the same money I know which ones I would buy (well, I already have!)

Yes, but from MNR they are cheaper than direct!!! Obviously otherwise I would have bought mine from Protech!!!

My full set of Protech shocks, two 13" open and two 12" open, bushed ends, 2.25" platforms but less springs, was £300.

If you use 1.9" platforms they are £315 incl springs and vat but excl carriage (which is quite cheap)

Stop worrying and buy em!

Always do the homework, direct isn't always cheapest!!!
