upper column droop?

last night i cut all the ignition barrel and webbing from the ally part of the upper sierra column.

The part with the ally that i was cutting down which is attached to the black plastic ribbed section all comes off as a sleeve with small bearings inside which is fine.

Something that I noticed beforehand but is more apparant now is that when i fit the steering wheel and boss and place the upper column in position in the chassis on its mount is that the upper section drops down until the back of the boss is sitting up against the ally section.

Did there used to be some sort of thrust bearing or spacer between the top of the column by the mount and the boss?

Or is this droop/slack taken up by the lower upper column bearing and the attachment to the downlink?

cheers,

Ned.

ps piccie showing column (not mine btw)

Yes - I had the same problem - I made a 'fat washer' on my lathe. It went between the face of the thrust bearing and the back of the wheel boss.

i.d. was an easy fit on the steering shaft. o.d. was an inch or so. Thickness about 1/4". I had to turn the rear face down a bit to ensure that it pressed on the bearing face, rather than the casing.

have fun!
David
