escort rack dimension
Can anyone tell me the dimensions of the escort rack?
Specifically, the distance between the two mounting points and the distance to where the steering shaft connects, measured from either of the
mountings?
I dont have a rack yet and have a concern that I may be a bit tighter to the FU tube for the column shaft than is ideal
Cheers
Alex
PS
I did try searching, but no success

I am buying a rack off INDYKID. He still has it so if you U2U him, he might be able to help.

i thought the escort rack had brackets that clip over, rather than fixed mountings? I have a rack in the garage like that, that i assumed was from an
escort. Sierra ones are much nicer IMHO, the mounting is level etc.

I shortened my rack housing 3" and my mounts are 7" apart so I'd say 10" between the mounts.
I'd estimate the pinion shaft is 1.75" from the nearest mount centre (but it's not quite square on so it's hard to say)
Obviously these are estimates & you may get better data from someone but bear in mind the pinion is not square on and not in the plane of the
mountings so your best bet is to try one in place before fully welding the FU tubes. . . . .

Hi Alex,
257 mm centre to centre of mounts.
Centre of o/s mount to centre of splined shaft = 60 mm

you chopped the rack housing? and did you shorten the internals i.e. rack?
How and why? (just curious)
Why not just cut down the track rods?
(or it is something to do with having too short track rods affecting bump steer?)

yeah shortened innards by 3.5" and housing by 3.
Done to get rid of bump steer (loads of threads about it......)
sliced off the passenger end of rack & re-turned the 'socket' and threads
cheers

Thanks everyone.
907: great stuff, much appreciated.
Bob C: Unfortunately I have welded the FU's I thought I was doing well waiting until I was doing the wishbone brackets before welding them,
forgot about the steering rack
Consolation is, 907's measurements look like I will be okay for the column fit
I hadn't realised that the rack is best shortened for bump steer though, I thought it was good enough as is!
Would it be easier/preferable to go for a shortened sierra rack, rather than a standard escort one?
Or is the shortening the rack a straight forward job?
Cheers
Alex
