collapsable steering column
Hi all
do u have to have a collapsable steering column to pass the SVA, as i have a MKII escort steering column which isn't

looks like the steering mechanism on that jalopy would collapse if you hit a daisy too fast!!

You can purchase collasable steering boss's which i believe comply with the SVA book,i seem to remember conrod fitting one to his 1st car for
the retest.

Unless the SVA manual has changed (which it could have done since I last read it!) then no it doesn't have to be collapsible, but if it
isn't collapsible, then it needs to have a certain angle at the two UJ's so that in a collision the column is not deflected into the
driver.
As the steering shaft angle is fairly fixed on these cars, and pretty marginal in terms of the angles involved, I think the concensus is that
it's easier to use a collapsible column than to argue technicalities with the SVA tester.
