WILWOOD calipers @ GTS

hello
i need a set of calipers for the front, im using sierra hubs, i saw that darren is selling wilwood sets on ebay for £200, these are the solid type disks though. i wanted vented but is there any downsides to using vented or solid? which ones would be the best option,
I know many people would say use the originals but i like the look of the wilwoods

Rob

I'm very reluctantly posting this as I don't want any lash backs. Its just simple fact. I think if you check first, he may have them for a buy it now price of £200 but he will then add VAT on after the sale.

Caliper Prices

Compare the price with those of Rally Design.

Hmmm, that's not on. If you sell (mainly) to the public, your prices must include VAT.

Not my rule...

Vented discs are heavier but will offer better protection against fade, although would that be a problem on a lightweight car like yours?

I have vents on mine and am considering switching to solids - vents just won't warm up enough on the road due to the light weight of the car. Plus there is an unsprung weight saving advantage.

The VAT element is CLEARLY noted on the auctions though, so not exactly a suprise.

As mentioned previously, vented are a LOT heavier and not necessary for a lightweight car.

I'm having a bit of a dilemma about this at the moment as well. I've got a pair of new vented discs & pads - cheap ones though. So I can either spend £70 on reconditioned sierra calipers & have cheap but not very optimum front end. OR I can get a set of wilwoods but it's going to cost £310 (Thats Rally Designs price for the cross drilled + pads + VAT). I'm leaning towards the cheaper option but I'm worried that they wont warm up enough & I'll have crappy brakes & end up buying the wilwoods after all.

How bad is bad when talking about cold brakes in vented discs?

Even standard brakes will be more than enough on a lightweight car - remember they were designed for stopping the equivalent of two or three Sevens!
The Wilwoods look nice but they will not really stop you much quicker unless you are building a race car, in which case you might benefit from the extra pad area.

One aspect which I suspect makes a difference is that there should be plenty of air getting to the discs in a seven due to the open wheel design. In a closed body car the vented discs are probably much more important. I don't speak from experience but would think that good quality solid discs (particularly drilled and grooved type) would be more than enough for road use and occasional track day driving with a seven.

A seven weighs around the same as a Mini Se7en racer. The best brakes they are allowed to use are 7.5" mini cooper S iron twin pots with drums on the rear.

They are not noted for being lethally dangerous under braking so I would suggest that for the road even standard sierra brakes are well in excess of what you need to stop (they were after all designed to stop 2 tonnes (at least, if you are fully loaded and have a trailer) in a safe distance at motorway speeds.

I think adding VAT after the fact is against eBay's AUP but I could be wrong, it's a while since I read it.

It is, it's also against advertising rules.

If you're advert isn't aimed at wholesalers and is aimed at consumers, you MUST quote prices inclusive of VAT, you're allowed to quote prices with both VAT and without, but the inclusive price must be given "greater prominence".

I'll just have a site-search and find out where CalvinX recommended we report "dodgy" advertising practices

Edited to add; I'm joking about reporting 'em, notice the smiley, just thought I'd better point that out for the hard-of-thinking

The auctions end with summat like 'visit my online store, the worlds finest supplier, all prices exclude VAT.' Which to me refers to the online site. You cannot offer a buy it now price and then up the price later for any reason. I'm not after an argument on this anyhow cos I know where these things go. It was just to make CORE Developments aware.

and i'm glad i've read this, i've seen the GTS ebay site in passing and noted the price of the calipers. I hadn't realised that they didn't include VAT. I'd made the assumption that the buy it now price was what you paid plus postage. Good to know.

curiosity - don't you just love it.

Read ebays terms and had a proper look at darrens advert.

There is nothing wrong with it. Ebay says you must state if VAT is to be added. Darren does. I'd prefer him to state it a bit higher up the description. But its his choice where he writes that.

Advertising Standards Agency is another matter. If the bulk of your customers are consumer then you must state "inc VAT" prices and they must have at least the same prominence as "ex VAT". But i can't see ASA being bothered going after Darren, he's small fry and there are undoubtedly thousands of other companies doing the same.

Of couse the real issue is .... it still seems a good deal to me

Hey, and thats all that matters. If its still a good deal then crack on. I can't justify he cost myself but they're a lovely looking bit of kit eh? Just thought I'd make you's aware though.

But in all seriousness, if you're shelling out a couple of hundred notes, would you buy from an ebayer with that feedback ?

I don't touch any ebayer with less than 95%, preferably 98%....

Its strange but i don't see it as buying of a unknown ebayer! Its buying off darren.

I can't at the moment justify the cost - but i'm tempted. I'd also probably go direct. For some reason that makes me feel i've got more recourse if things don't work out (using a credit card as well).

If i really was to spend the money i'll also hunt round the other suppliers to see what the could do.
