Wheel size and offset advice needed - for my tintop
I recently bought a Celica GT-Four, ST205. It currently has the standard fugly toyota three-spoke wheels on and I want to replace them. It's
turning out to be not a simple task.
The standard wheels are 16x7.5" ET35 (5x100PCD) running 205/50 tyres. Though for some reason it's wearing 225/50's on the back and
215/50's on the front at the moment, goodness knows why.
I'd like to stay on 16"s because I'm a fan of tyres with air in them, progressive breakaway, sidewalls and all that good stuff. If I
went to 17"s I'd have to go to 40 profile to maintain the rolling radius which is too low for my taste.
However the calipers are pretty massive and most places I've phoned round say their wheels won't fit or will need spacers. I have found
some I like a lot that are ET40 but the guys at topgear.co.uk recon they'll need 20-25mm spacers to clear the calipers!
If I go to 17"s I'll apparently have more choice and not need spacers.
So my request for comment is along the lines of: what would 20mm spacers, giving me effective ET20 (if I understand right) do for my ride / steering /
suspension wear?
And how would 40/17's differ from 50/16's in terms of ride and handling?
Any comments including suggestions of some good 16" wheels are welcomed. Obviously the standard ones fit, but keeping them is not an option,
they hurt my eyes
Cheers all and have an excellent Easter.
