Live axle oil seal

When dismantling my rear axle last night, I noticed a very thin seal sat on the bearing, not attached to anything. I saw these on both sides (althugh one side was broken). To the best of my knowledge the only oil seal is the one recessed into the bearing. Can anyone enlighten me as to what it could be, do I need it, and if so, where on earth do I get a new one from?

If it doesn't fit MODIFY it!!

This may seem a silly question but what side of the bearing is this oil seal?

I think you mean an "O" ring --- not standard fittment just put the shaft back in with a tiny smear of jointing compound round the outside of the bearing
