How much Grease to pack in...

how much grease to i use / pack in when replacing the cv boot on a sierra diff???

I have taken the drive shafts off, and the cv joints etc - cleaned them out so they have very little grease left in them.

usually the amount provided in the sachet in the CV boot replacement kit

Haynes manual may tell you, failing that, go and look at a boot replacement kit at the motor factors and see what size the sachet of grease is.

yea, i got the small pack of grease, but bear in mind that most people dont wash out all the grease when chaing the cv boot, so the sachet might not be enough...

I reckon the sachet provides enough as a split CV boot empties it's grease fairly well so the repair kit should allow for this.

I cleaned mine out completely when I overhauled them and filled them up witht he sachet. 500 miles so far and no problems.

Completely cleaned mine out, and nearly 3k miles later, still OK, as far as I am aware.
Std sachet used.

depends as sometimes it says on the instrutions for the boot to only use half the grease in the pack but personaly anytime i have done cv joints i have cleaned them out totaly with petrol let dry and then put everything back together useing the specified amount of grease, so i uess i aint been much elp but as far as i know you can over fill them as the excess will just cling to the inside of the boot

It is possible to overpack them imo. I went a bit crazy with the stuff and I believe that is what caused my new CV boot to fail while on the rolling road. I think that a big dollop stuck to the inside of the boot and caused it to wobble so much that it got pinched in the tripod bearings at 152mph The boot exploded and everyone within 20 feet of the car got splattered with warm, black Satan snot!

Hey, its a theory I cleaned and repacked with the sachet supplied with the new cv boot and everyting has been fine for 3k miles [crosses fingers]

What type of grease is it what you find in these sachet, or is it just standard grease? This because I always have the nasty habit to dismantel everyting I have, also when it is perfectly fine. This is also the case for my CV boots. I removed the clips that holds the boots, loosing some of the grease. However, my CV boots are perfectly fine, so don't want to buy new boots.

CV Grease is a lithium based grease of Number 2 (medium) consistency, containing Molybdenum disulphide.

You need to pack 80 grammes of grease into each one.

Nope, that is how much grease is in each sachet in Fords replacement CV boot kit.
