tyre pressures on BEC Sylva/Raw Striker

Can anybody let me know what tyre pressures they are running in their Striker BEC's please.

I have done a search on the forum and there seems to be a general trend to between 16-18psi independent of car.
The Striker is one of the lighter kits cos its a little smaller and with the bike engine (ZX9r) lighter still. I'm running around 15 psi on yoko's (will check the type tonight) the tyres have load of tread left on them but are a few years old.

Any advice would be appreciated cos even with two people in the car 1st gear above 8000 rpm and the rear wheels spin at full throttle.

The side wall at 10psi looks very simalar to the side wall 15psi.

I'm at Curborough on tuesday so I can have a play. What is the minimum pressure you can run in a tyre, if the tyre does not look deflated is this gonna be ok.

I'm no expert in tyres but I would approach a pressure as low as 10psi with extreme caution on the track - the last thing you want is for the tyre to roll off the rim at speed in a corner.

Run the tyre at say 16 to 18 psi and check temperature across the tread after a fast run.

If it's even across the tread thats right - if the pressure's too low the temperature will be low in the middle of the tyre - too high and temp will be higher in the middle.

It will take a larger difference in weight than that between your car than other 7's to allow you to pull the pressure as low as 10psi

Also I have found that a phone chat with the tyre technologist at the manufacturer's head office can be informative.

I run my R1 striker at 16psi. Wouldn't want to go much lower than this.

ta, 10psi is low, I'm thinking if starting at around 14psi.
I am wondering if the rubber starts to harden with age? Maybe the tyres just need a dammed good hammering to get rid of some old surface rubber.
ta for the info

I would imagine your problem is more to do with the fact that

a) Your car is light
b) You have a powerful engine
c) Your tyres are not that grippy

Just for reference I use around 17psi with Yoko 048's which gives a hot running pressure of around 22psi - this is what yokohama spec for best grip.

When I had Yokohama AVS on an MK indy R1 I could easily spin up the rears even in 2nd. With Avon ACB10's I had much better grip once they came upto temp. Cold they were even worse than the AVS's!

Stick with 16psi as a min.

what type of yoko's are they?

the track day rubber like A032 and A048 have very good strong sidewalls so you can run low pressures in them.
i would suspect though if they have lots of tread they will be a road tyre may be A539's.

i would say dont go under much under 14 psi for this type of tyre on the road, on the track however you can run the track day tyres (r888, A048 and slicks with a good sidewall down to 8psi if you want!!!

use caution though 8 psi should be used only for a drag race or one sprint lap

have fun

Hi am i right in thinking that it was the 510's that where replaced by the 539's (sorry memory has gone)

If so they must be at least 4 years old making them well past there best for handeling. The 539's are past there best after 18 months.

cheers matt

I use 15-16psi with R888s on my R1 Striker. It works fine on the road and track for me!

I am using A048's in medium compound, albeit in a slightly heavier car (550kg ish) and I run 18psi all round and I am SHOCKED by the level of grip that I do have!!!

I was ready to drive everywhere sideways, as I love doing that, but in actual fact unless I really animal the car it just grips. Obviously it will spin up in 1st, and it does squirm a lot in second and a tad in 3rd, but nothing to have make you feather the throttle. (Ps this is with a lot more power than your little bike engines too! 200hp and 165 lbft of torque)

what rear springs are you running?

I am using 140lb rears with the protech dampers set on 2 clicks, which both seem way lighter than most on here, even on BEC's, and yet I am toying with lighter springs still, even with passengers in the car!! (mine is IRS stuart taylor)

I certainly woudn't go with less than 15psi, and those that are saying 10 psi have clearly not gone round a corner, as you WILL lose it off the rim, I have done so trying to run less than 12 psi on the grasser, and that was on reinforced sidewall forst rally tyres!!!!!! that's why we use beadlock bolted rims now!!

Also, its news to me that Ao48R's have stiff sidewalls, can you comment Matt (Procomp) as I always thought they had very thin and compliant sidewalls, mine seemed to when I fitted them!!

I run at 18psi on my 600kg locost - I tried 16psi but that squirmed too much - just didn't give me confidence.
