how much drag from disc brakes?

over past 2 evenings I took apart, cleaned and refitted the pistons in the near side claiper (cortina m16).

I had a nasty snaking braking experience from stoneligh so thought I'd best sort it out.

the inner piston seemd to be very hard to push into the cliper - stuck?

taking apart ther was rust coloured stains that rubber off with 1200 wetndry - no pitting or any signs of dmaage to surface. I reckon that the clapier were left dry so there was no fluid between the seal and piston to account for the stiffness.

anyway, after reassemlby, both pistons move freely.

I bled brakes, yadda hadda then jackd up front of car.

passenger side wheel spins freely - you can hear som contact of dic and pads but driver's side, whcih used to be the freer of the two wheels is dragging (you can spin it on its won but turns by hand easily). So which one is normal?

Do the pads/discs need to rebed so that I'll get some drag or do I need to clean out the driver's side too?

Sounds like the driver's side is sticking too. The only satisfactory solution is to strip, clean, replace seals/pistons if necessary and rebuild.

The seals should pull the piston back enough to release the pressure so the only contact is a slight rubbing.

yours, Pete

I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.

I take it you renewed the seals 90%+ this is the reason for a dragging caliper. The only return spring i the caliper is the inner seal this pulls the piston back a fraction of a mm.
If the seal is hard with age or swollen due to contamination with WD40 the brake sticks.

WD40 contains paraffin type hydrocarbons and should not be used on hydraulic parts.

Ensure the pads are free in the caliper --this is a well known problem with Cortina/Escort/Capri/Grandad calipers.

If you have metal braided flex hoses check fluid is flows through them easily -- I have encountered ones with end fittings not properly drilled.

all signs point to a driver side overhaoul; I guess having free spinning wheels is goona release some bhps that otherwise end up a heat
