Tin top brake fluid question

My friend has to flush out and clean part of his brake system....what is the best solvent/cleaner for this?

Clean brake fluid only.
I would be very worried about anything else. Unless you are stripping it all out.

Lots and lots of brake fluid. The Handbook for the HIllman Imp (really my only reference) says a Quart (=1L) through each bleed nipple, in case of contamination.

Use Dot 4 in an older system, 5.1 in a newer system (thinner, lasts longer). Don't mix sillicone and ordinary.

Why is he having to flush it? If Oil cotamination or similar, the seals and hoses should be replaced.

Use DOT 4 unless it is a really high performance car that is going to get 2 yearly fluid changes.

DOT 4 is a lot less hydroscopic than DOT 5.1so lasts longer. DOT5.1 starts out with a higher boiling point but affer 6 months the boiling point has fallen to below that of fresh DOT4.

NB DOT 5 is silicon based DOT 5.1 is ester based.
This causes a lot of confusion.

To flush out first syphon out any flush in the reservoir then refill and bleed through starting with the longest pipe up.

Thanks guys...the reason was that my friend had mixed the two types (that should not be mixed) and needs to clean out the system...it is the front brakes only.... on his motorcyle.

If its silicon fluid and a conventional fluid it is np big deal. Also a trick to get more fluid out the brake pads can be pushed back.

If it is (much less likely) a mineral type fluid ie Castrol LHM as used by Citreon and Rolls Royce an complete strip and new seals is required.
