best way to clean up used calipers

hello all,

whats the best way to clean up a set of used calipers?

I thought about dipping them in my electrolysis ( cant spell i know ) fluid for a day, but not sure if the rubber seals will like that...........

then i thought about a wirebrush in a drill, but then i realised im quite lazy.....

the last is buying new recon ones, but im a tight wad..

so does anyone have any good advice on how they recon'ed there calipers?

Last place to be a tight wad is on your brakes.

Vinegar works well & wont damage the seals, just brush the worst of the rust off first.
There is a thread on the vinegar treatment.

I no longer run Furore Products or Furore Cars Ltd, but would still highly recommend them for Acewell dashes, projector headlights, dominator headlights, indicators, mirrors etc, best prices in the UK! Take a look at http://www.furoreproducts.co.uk/ or find more parts on Ebay, user names furoreltd & furoreproducts, discounts available for LCB users.
Don't forget Stainless Steel Braided brake hoses, made to your exact requirements in any of around 16 colours. http://shop.ebay.co.uk/furoreproducts/m.html?_dmd=1&_ipg=50&_sop=12&_rdc=1

I would replace all the seals in any case.

Lets face good brakes are a potential life saver and not worth skimping on.

Electrolysis is by far the best... it made my old calipers better than reconned ones I bought.

Check out the thread...

did you take the pistons out or leave them in while cleaning them?

i will obviously be rebuilding the caliper with new seals etc, but im hoping that seeing as they keep the brake fluid in, they should keep the soda water out.

Buy new ones.

If they are Sierra ones I paid £26 each.

I took the pistons out and the seals, but I know people on here have done it without dismantling.

As long as you use washing soda there will be no damage to rubber seals.

I got a 1kg bag of washing soda in Tesco by the way.

I also bought a set of recon calipers. My home reconned ones out of the electrolysis bath were in better condition. You only need new seals then.
