diff/axle help
hello again help neded once more lol
a friend of mine has a mk3 cortina 1.3xf
and has offered me his rear axle i only want the crownwheel and pinion as its a nice high one and will give lots of acceleration
my question is will it fit into a capri rear axle (just the c.w.p remember not the diff itself)

I swapped the original 3.45 ratio crownwheel / pinion from 2L cortina axle in my old Tiger 6 for a 4.11 ratio from (i believe) a 1.3L cortina. That
worked perfectly for 4 years with no issues.
Degrease the bolts holding the crownwheel to the diff properly and then use the correct grade threadlock before torqueing to the correct setting. You
definately dont want these coming loose once its back together!!

The Mk3 Cortina 1.3 axle should have a smaller cwp set than a Capri (1.6 (some)2.0, 2.8).
The 2.0 Capri is fitted with what is commonly known as an Atlas axle, the Cortina 1.3/1.6 and some 2.0 had the KOLN or Cologne type axle. Although
many 2.0 and some estates have an Atlas type axle fitted.
The easiest way to check if it will swap is to offer the backplate from one axle to the other, if the backplate fits then the gears should swap.
This is assuming the 1.3 does not have an English type diff that comes in from the front. If this is the case then the gears will swap to a 1.3/1.6
Capri with an English diff type axle.

Not adviseable
You will lower the gearing so far that the lower gears will become too short.
Apart from that most (but not quite all) 1.3 mk3 Cortinas used a weaker axle than the bigger engined models.
If the car has 8" rear drums then it is likely to be the weaker axle.
Some Cortina Mk3 (ie less than 50%) models had a non-servo brake master cylinder if this is available grab it with both hands -- it has a smaller
bore than the servo type.
