Wheel Stud Length

I have Cortina MK4 front uprights & rear axle, & Capri Lazer alloys. The question is do I need to fit longer wheel studs ? If so can they be changed without dismantling the hubs & what length should they be. Any help or advice greatly appreciated.

Rule of thumb

I don't know the specifics of your situation, but the rule of thumb is that you need as much thread outside the wheel as the diameter of the stud.

For example, if the stud is 1/2" in diameter, you need 1/2" of threads beyond the wheel for the lugnut to grip. More won't help, by the way, but less is considered dangerous.

I believe the MSA regs, which should have a nice degree of safety built in, say you should have 1.5 times the diameter available through the wheel for the nut. In practice just go to your local Ford dealer and buy sierra studs, part number F6586309 (they were 73p+VAT each last April), and they will be perfect. You can fit them at the front without dismantling the hub. Not sure about the back I've got a sierra IRS rear.

Additional info: SpeedShack sell all manner of studs, wheels nuts, conversion bits etc. They managed to find me some hybrid Peugeot/Ford bolts about 3" long from stock! Phone number at www.speedshack.co.uk. No connection just been good for me in the past.
