quaife diff

Howmuch does it cost to have a quaife diff installed? I saw a few for sale in shops for around 430 Pounds for the English axle. Is the install difficult to do yourself? Howmuch is the labour?

I was really hoping someone might help out here - I may well do the same at some point and was interested too!

OK with my limited knowledge of building up lsd's for oval racing (so not so much high mileage use) here's my input.

After pulling the shafts and removing the diff from the casing you need to remove the crown wheel and carrier/planet gear set up DON'T remove the pinion or prop drive flange.
Remove the bearing caps, pull the crownwheel and planet gear assembly out and then you can remove the crownwheel fron this assembly.
Fit the crown wheel to the new Quaife unit.
I use thread lock on the bolts but you may choose to use new ones.
I doubt your quaife will come with bearings so you'll need to order new (at the same time as the diff cause I have seen some tranx ones that do NOT use the same bearings as the original axle.
fit the bearings etc and slip the new assy int the carrier and use the rings with holes to move the diff closer to or farther away from the pinion in order to get the correct backlash (you'll need a dial indicator) from memory 4 to 8 thou is the clearance I think.
There is a torque setting/bearing preload for the diff adjuster rings(with the holes) but I don't know what it is and usually just go by feel. Perhaps someone else can enlighten us on it.Just make sure the are fully against the bearing race face. Then fit the bolts and locking tabs to the again with threadlocker.
And there you go it's time to reassemble the axle/halfshafts etc.

One other thing. I have seen on some units that the clearance on the crownwheel bolts is very tight to the casing CHECK THIS before installing to the axle casing. You may need to dress away the casing (Rare).
Remeber to give the casing and everything a good wash out before assembly.
This is a general insight to what's involved and if your not sure then take it to a reputable firm for peace of mind. I reckon around about £150 £175 would be reasonable for the labour.

If it looks wrong it probably is wrong.
