cortina rack

Just went to change my steering rack (cortina) for one I bought off ebay some months back ("factory reconned" and the rubbers do not fit the new one as it is about 4mm larger around the body (both ends). I thought 3,4 and 5 racks were all the same. If anyone can explain this please let me know!
