Fitting quick release adapter

I have a quick release boss I want to fit to my adjustable steering column. As I understand it I need to cut the top hex part off the column and weld on the splined part that comes with the quick release boss. Is it ok to MIG weld this and should I drill a couple of holes into the column and puddle weld through to the splined bit aswell as all the way around.

Is there anything else I need to do to the column?

Yep sounds ok. I didn't cut off the thread I just made a sleeve to take up the slack and then centralise the adaptor. I then just welded the end and then the other end. It wasn't gonna budge!

Ditto ^^^^

I also drilled through the whole lot and pinned it together..... belt & braces .....etc...

1.Splined bit welded to column (threaded end turned down to fit inside the splined bit)
2.Sleeve tube over top and welded to slug at one end and column at the other end.
3. 2 pins through the whole lot and ends welded to sleeve.

Whole lot rubbed down and painted , looks like it was meant to be there.

Ash.

haven't got round to fitting yet, just one more question. How do you hold in place the bearing cap inside the column after the sleeve is welded on?
