General rant about B&Q & Velux!
Guinness - 5/4/08 at 08:41 PM

What a mixed day! Went out with SWIMBO looking for inspiration for our new en-suite and came back with 3 Velux windows.

My local B&Q are changing the product lines they stock, so had reduced all their Velux windows to clear, from £170 to £99! So I got all three we need for the loft conversion, saving me £210!

On the downside though, when I got one of the flashing kits home and unpacked, it looks like someone has been there before me and mullered it! So that's going back to the store in the morning. Suppose it serves me right for not noticing the packaging had been opened at one end! But why put it back on the shelves? It's no use to anyone now!

I thought I'd have a read through the instructions for installing the windows tonight. There isn't a single word in the book. It's just a series of pictures, on seven pages much like Ikea instructions. Why can't people use words anymore, or dimensions? It's all X+40-60mm and Y+45mm!!!

The instructions are all pictures so they only need one set for all languages (or at least minimal translation) and the X+Nmm means only one set all sizes of window of the same design.

Probably saves them a few pence in printing charges per window. Also means they will get fewer returns from illiterate customers.

A picture paints a thousand words??

Instructions are crap. As long as you fit the window frame to either top of tile batten level or rafter level ie. whichever surface your tiles or slates sit on....you will be ok.

The key to flashing kits is to follow the numbered sequence . Take the sash out with the glass in it and store safely until everything is installed......you may have some fun fitting it back in
