No, not the sort that involves reclining seats and steamed windows, the aural stimulation variety. How many of you, if any, have bothered with a car stereo? Is there any point? Can you hear it? Are you generally too busy savouring the finely-tuned howl of the engine to bother? Or is it a case of wind+road+engine noise makes all but a jackhammer-defeating volume inaudible? Feedback will be most welcome (plus it means I can cut a bit more off the donor wiring loom ;-) )

theconrodkid - 26/8/03 at 04:43 PM

personaly i think you need to concentrate on the road even more in a 7,radio would be a distraction wouldnt be able ton hear it anyhow

Stu16v - 26/8/03 at 11:17 PM

Fit a pair of sidedraft Webers, music to the ears......

ChrisW - 27/8/03 at 08:19 AM

I'm planning on putting some form of music in although it'll be the most crappy stereo I can find as it'd be far too easy for someone to grab it!

(ducks for cover!)

Chris

Simon - 27/8/03 at 08:56 AM

I may wire up the stereo that came with the Sierra.

If it picks up Classic FM, then fine. If not, it'll be put in the same place as the rest of the unwanted Sierra bits.

In the skip.

means i can take the the MP3 player out of its sradle, and there's nothing to steal left in the car..

Mark H - 27/8/03 at 10:12 AM

No you will NOT be able to hear a stereo, unless you're driving Miss Daisy.

With the wind ringing in your ears (or, if you're a real man, you're wearing a helmet coz you ain't got a screen) and the sound of an engine/webers etc you wont stand a chance. And remember on one side you'll have a f off exhaust 2 foot from your ear!

You could of course buy a Z3.

stephen_gusterson - 27/8/03 at 10:35 AM

Rob Lane posted a while back that side screens made a BIG difference to his car noise wise.

You just need a stereo with enuf power.....but dont forget the gold plated fuses! - and the 300 quid a metre special speaker wire

I know that most guys here are of advancing years, but new technology has led to a marvellous new radiogram type device- the headphone!
Its operation is just like the trumpet speaker on your trusty 78 radiogram, but is inserted into your ear...

Dual use- acts as earplugs, and allows easy listening to all manner of tunes, some even in the Popular Parade of Pops!!

Mark H - 27/8/03 at 12:24 PM

The pigs'll love that!!

And the loud knob will be twisted right up - you will sound like a carnival float fallking off a cliff!

I find people look around at the car anyway (I don't check of course) without the cheeky girls or some other pop legend banging out.

Tell you what - once the car is SVA'd drive it round for a bit, tinker with the bits that need improving (in my case quite a few!) THEN see if you want to add a stez.

If you are, the boot will fit a bass tube into quite snugly, and the neon strips can go under the front wings!

Oh sorry - thought i was on the "How to spend £33 grand on a French 1.1 litre hot(ahem)hatch and make it worth less than your mums" Forum for a mo - anyone else watch 5th Gear?!!

Only kidding mates! Don't let any sound/style fascist tell you what you can and can't do.

I'll be resurrecting my old Des O'Connor albums and getting them onto that new fangled tape cassette stuff then, and I have a great yodelling album that I can listen to in the car and some Black and White Menstruals. Why is James last Chris?

yours, Pete.

stephen_gusterson - 27/8/03 at 07:32 PM

8 tracks were made in the usa until about 1986. You are right, there is a shyte load of music to grow into an oap by on cart.

However, my music is stuff like queen.

Big advantage is you cant get boy bands on 8 track 'cept osmonds!

jmbillings - 18/4/04 at 11:45 AM

Err, going back on topic (sorry!) I made an intercom box and we use some pc headphone/microphone thingies that just take up one ear so the other is free for hearing the traffic etc. (This is for when we have helmets on longer trips, otherwise you just shout )
Anyway, the intercom box has a 3rd input that can connect to a portable radio/cd player/mp3 player/whatever and by default this is what gets piped into the earpiece. But press a small switch on the console and the inputs flick to the microphone so driver can hear passenger and vice versa. Release switch and its back to the music.

Just to back up Mark H............can't believe it either!!! If you wanna listen to a stereo get a mondeo, if your 7 is so boring that you need a stereo then it obviously has no engine in it!!

Wadders - 28/4/04 at 11:19 PM

And then of course there's the screaming coming from the passenger to contend with.......

i was thinking of learning some song lyrics and just singing loudly! with my singing being so good screams from the passengers might sound quite harmonious!!!

JamJah - 29/4/04 at 03:37 PM

Just bought my car a radio. Thought it was a bit lonely in the garage.

jonti - 30/4/04 at 03:01 PM

I shall be taking my trusty Philips portable wind up gramophone along in the boot for picnics.... Plus my Joe Loss and 'Ink Spots' 78rpm records of course !....aahhh wispering grass !!!!

Kitlooney1000 - 1/5/04 at 08:16 PM

IMHO the only In Car Entertainment you need is a gear stick in your left hand, a steering wheel in your right hand, a throttle under your right foot and plenty of round abouts.

jonti - 4/5/04 at 05:33 PM

And a woman for when you....erm "run out of petrol"........well someone has to push.

Hellfire - 4/5/04 at 11:05 PM

it's actually not legal for the driver to wear headphones whilst driving. IIRC

I agree with the "who needs music!"... you'll not hear it anyway!

Dale - 5/5/04 at 12:14 AM

For those who wish to have a bit of music or traffic reports telling where the radar traps are you could go the route of small speakers mounted in the headrest of your seats. The Pontiac Fiero had them in there gt version and gave the ability of not having the blairing outside of the car. Unless thats what your looking for.
Dale

richijenkin - 12/5/04 at 07:21 PM

OK OK,, I cant take it anymore .... I.... I....I have a radio in mine OK!!! ... ahhhhh, I feel better now for sharing that.

Will soon be replacing the dash and taking it out! I cant hear it above 30Mph anyway...hehe

Peteff - 12/5/04 at 09:02 PM

That's what you've been smoking is it? Joe Loss and his orchestra, got them on the new wax cylinder format when they first came out. Did you hear them on the Billy Cotton band show?

mandy69 - 13/5/04 at 07:11 PM

Seems to me that most of you building these cars are old duffers who like their comfort too much so why bother?
The whole point ,for me anyway of this type of car is too be able to actually enjoy driving.

Cheeky young scrote !!!!..... I'll race yer round the 'ouses anyday!.....Me bodywork might be (relatively) old but me engine's still in good order (as long as it's well oiled anyway !)..........I dunno kids today..no respect !!!

That's because when we were young duffers like you son......we didn't have the money to build anything.

When I were your age I used to work a 26hour shift 380 days a year down t' pit, live in a cardboard box an' had nowt t' eat cept bits o' cardboard and rabbit droppins.

We had no shoes...me mam used to black our feet and lace our toes up.

An we 'ad no central heatin'..me dad used to suck a peppermint and we all sat round 'is tongue.

And we were grateful!!!!

AND another thing........if I didn't enjoy driving AND building cars (not just talking about it !!) I'd not be building one anyway.......so there !

Must go I've got to service the wife and girlfriend.......................now, where's me viagra ? :

Pete

Yeah I remember the Billy Cotton Band show.......whatever happened to Alan Breeze ?

[Edited on 14/5/04 by jonti]

Peteff - 14/5/04 at 12:03 PM

Keep it down though or you'll mess your hair up. If you're not interested in the build just go out and buy a car. I enjoyed the build so much I'm doing another now. How many 7 type cars have you actually driven, are you sure you will enjoy it once you've built it? There are different types of driving and the locost is a bit raw if you know what I mean. I got to Stoneleigh after 60ish motorway miles with no windscreen and had to wait 30 minutes for my hearing to come back. If you are just going to run round the local back roads it's a different matter.

Dale - 14/5/04 at 09:26 PM

Jonti, you lucky lucky bastard you had feet. We had to walk around on stump, uphill everywhere we went (both ways of course) and damit we were thankfull cause god knows there were others that just wished for stumps.

Dale

Peteff - 14/5/04 at 10:03 PM

She's a girl, Jonti, she'll whup you easy you being old and all. Go easy on him Mandy and if he croaks can I have his zimmer frame.

jonti - 14/5/04 at 10:31 PM

'ow do you know it's a girl Pete ?

Might just be a cheeky pup with a tarts monica .....

If 'tis a girl though I apologise for callin' her a scrote...I'll find out what the female of scrote is and re-post.....

As for stumps Dale........LUXURY !!!...we 'ad nowt but our bums to shuffle on!

locost_bryan - 19/5/04 at 12:34 AM

If M. Schmacher and J. Button can listen to talkback radio while they're driving on the A1(ring), why can't the rest of us?

Anyway, if you want to listen to "Born to be Wild", just grow long hair so the plods can't see your ear plugs...

... and shouldn't our fave rave be "ess club 7" (the more esses the better!)?

JamJah - 19/5/04 at 11:04 AM

Arent some of you missing the point a tad. headphones are only illegal in both ears. you can still have mono. I like the mounted speakers idea. But then my locost is goning to be finished when petrol is £90.00 a litre at this rate!

locost_bryan - 21/5/04 at 12:45 AM

Some MX-5's had speakers in the headrests - wouldn't be hard to add "wings" to your head restraint and fit speakers.

But lets face it, if you want to listen to the wireless you'd hear it better with a cup of tea in the kitchen

madman280 - 29/8/04 at 09:35 PM

I really don't think headphones are illegal here in North America. I'm also quite sure deaf people are allowed to drive. I would even think that the wind buffeting in the cockpit at highway speeds could cause deafness. Many people wear earplugs when riding motorcycles and open cocpit cars on the highway for this very reason.
Now to the subject at hand..anyone tried something like this: http://www.autocom.co.uk
would be nice to have some music from a MP3 player, talk with the passenger and talk handsfree on the mobile phone.

ptrxly - 3/9/04 at 10:47 AM

I have MX5 (Miata) seats with speakers in the headrests in my TVR Tasmin and they are just fine, allowing me to hear the stereo at any speed. -much better than the factory setup both in sound and comfort. Also, I fround that wearing earplugs for longer trips in my old Westfield Eleven or on my motorbike made the event much more enjoyable and less tiring. That been said, my hearing in the higher frequencies is almost gone!

mackie - 3/9/04 at 11:17 AM

I might wire in a ciggy lighter socket so I can use my satnav system in the car.
Now I just need an add on which gives reads out pace notes for you

Markp - 6/9/04 at 09:54 PM

I have a cd player in mine, and it is nice to have. When driving around town it is turned off but when I went to Le Mans this year it was nice to get rid of the constant noise of the exhaust (which went on for 6-7 hours each way) and listen to some of my favourite tunes. I enjoy the sound of the car but not for hours on end.

I have side screens fitted and can still hear the music at 90mph and talk to the passenger (if I want ) And when the hood goes on it gets rid of all the little noises you don't want to hear.

I use my car for hours upon end and have never regretted fitting the radio.

Just my opinion

Mark
