VW Golf lettering

Can anyone tell me how the Golf coloured lettering works on the back of the GTi and TDi

Not sure if its the same with the GTi but I've seen some TDis with red D and I and some with the red I. Does the former mean the 130 and the latter mean the 115? What about the 150 bhp one?

Sorry if all the above was confusing, just looking at Golf Dervs, mk4s really. Was very impressed with my mates TDi 130

I believe the red one means "turbo" - that's my daughter's Mk 4 1.8 GTi turbo (petrol) has on the back anyway...

TDi's

All red 150 bhp.
Red Di 130 bhp
Red I 110/115 bhp
all silver 90/100 bhp.

And i think GTi red I is turbo.

I agree with the above and I have seen a few recently as my Passat Red 'I' is about to be swapped in for a Red 'DI'.

One word of caution check under the bonnet as the badge on the rocker cover should also match. It has been known for the rear badges to get 'upgraded' and the engine left as is !!!!!!!

If you really want to check there is a list of engine codes the first 3 or 4 digits wil tell you the engine BHP.

But I may be wrong but the 110 is actually the PS rating which is the european measurment of our BHP the good news is that the

- PS is the power at the wheels
- BHP is the power at the flywheel

Could be wrong as it was a light hearted pub argument late in the evening !!

Yeah but they shared that with Ford !!! but wasny the red arround the letters not the actual letters.

Re the Passat 130 4 motion what did you get the millage upto ?

Got the my 110 to 200k no real problems and it is driven hard - but regular oil changes.

would like the 4 motion for trailer work but it would have to be a 125k on the clock do you reckon the 4 motion could make the 200k mark ?

There are many genuine exceptions to the rule, early gti 1.8t mk4 golfs were all silver letters, and some of the diesels don't conform but generally thats about correct

VW did start out putting different letters on different specs, but it all went a bit random fairly quickly, so the short answer is that the colour of the GTI means nowt

So we are saying that the letters mean nowt and all the engine internals are differrent??????????? Or are they all just mapped differently???????????????

If it looks wrong it probably is wrong.

different turbo's, injectors and maps.

115 small turbo and injectors
130 bigger turbo and large injectors
150 bigger turbo again but same injectors as 130.

all of course will have different maps on them.

If you want to tune one I've been told you're better off starting with a 130 as they're normally cheaper and if you're fitting a hybrid turbo it won't make any difference over a 150.

the 130 can go to 200bhp on standard turbo and injectors with a remap and larger intercooler.
