MSVA for older vehicles

I've just been looking at the MSVA page: https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-approval/motorcycle-single-vehicle-approval

It says MSVA is for radically altered vehicles, but also for vehicles under 10 years old. So what do you do if you radically alter a vehicle over 10 years old?

That was my understanding too (I think I may have brought his up a few years ago?)

So if you modify a car older than 10 years it doesn't need an IVA?

my take is:
if you substantially modify a car / bike it becomes an unregistered vehicle, and requires testing before it can be reregisted.

and that the 10 year rule is for imported production vehicles,
ie Mazda Bongo from Japan.

The page linked to above says:

Exemptions from vehicle approval
You do not need vehicle approval for:
cars and minibuses with 8 passenger seats or less (not including the driver) over 10 years old

and only later says:

If you’re importing a vehicle

Exactly this, but to clarify the Importing a vehicle bit is a heading for things needing to be done and is separate and distinct from modified 10 year old cars

99.99% sure this does NOT apply to anything which you radically alter - say you had a golf buggy which you wanted to make road legal, or even a race car, as long as you can prove it's over 10 years old, not been registered previously in UK & you DON'T radically alter it in getting it to comply with road/MoT regs then you don't need IVA, but I'm sure if you radically alter ANY vehicle, whatever the age then it would (legally) require IVA

The hot rod guys get around this all the time with cars that have "old" chassis - except they are actually anything but - it all depends on how close to the wind you want to sail & what's gonna happen when the sticky brown stuff hits the fan in an accident & a knowledgeable plod (not too many of them) gets involved

I would be really happy if someone could prove me wrong on this, but just think about all the vehicles DVLA have taken & crushed because they are incorrectly registered - loads of those are well over 10 years old, I'm talking about 7's registered as Vivas or Escorts or whatever - try & claim that it's over 10 years old so doesn't need IVA & you'd be up a creek without a paddle

I do think their site is poorly worded & misleading tho'

I no longer run Furore Products or Furore Cars Ltd, but would still highly recommend them for Acewell dashes, projector headlights, dominator headlights, indicators, mirrors etc, best prices in the UK! Take a look at http://www.furoreproducts.co.uk/ or find more parts on Ebay, user names furoreltd & furoreproducts, discounts available for LCB users.
Don't forget Stainless Steel Braided brake hoses, made to your exact requirements in any of around 16 colours. http://shop.ebay.co.uk/furoreproducts/m.html?_dmd=1&_ipg=50&_sop=12&_rdc=1
