Any PC experts online today - need help

when I start up my laptop, it goes to the black 'DOS' screen(I think).

It asks to start up in Safe mode / safe mode with network / safe mode with command promps / last used config mode.

I have selected all these options... the laptop starts the start up, I get the windows XP screen with the time bar scrolling. then it goes back to the safe mode screen - on all the options.

any ideas whats wrong and how to fix it ?

sounds like one of the files needed to load windows is corrupt or missing. Could try to repair windows by putting the windows CD in the CD/DVD drive and when it loads you will be given the option to repair.

Edit: you dont want to reinstall windows as that can wipe your hard drive!!

Have you tried resetting CMOS?

The mental gymnastics a landlord will employ to justify immoral actions is clinically fascinating. Just because something is legal doesn't make it moral.

Could be the hard drive on its way out and corrupting the file system. Can you boot into safe mode or do you get the same result? If you can get into safe mode I get your backup off then try a reinstall.

Cheers
