I have just bought a car that has an MOT but no tax that I have agreed to collect on Saturday. I need to get the car taxed before I drive it back so was planning on getting the tax from a Post Office local to the guy I am buying it from on the Saturday morning. I am buying it purely to sell on after I have tarted it up as a little project (to make some extra cash to put towards my toy car upgrades) so only wanted to insure it for the day...

Will the Post Office accept an emailed PDF copy of an insurance document?

Will they accept an insurance document that is only valid for one day?

I have looked on the gov.com website and googled but cannot find a definitive answer....

Would appreciate it if someone could help.

Can't give a definitive answer but some recent experiance:
1. My insurance documents were emailed to me (2 years running now) and I printed out my insurance certificate. That's the way the insurance company work (Aviva). Not used it at a post office 'cause I taxed online.
2. Recently used the 1 day insurance for a courtesy car and the certificate specifically said it could not be used to tax a car.

So not looking to good but hopefully someone else can be more specific.

dont think you will be able to tax it. May be better to book it in for a local MOT and drive straight to MOT station least you get round the TAX issue

The 'short term cover' certificates I have seen state that they cannot be used to tax a vehicle but I can't see how the MID knows policy details! Obviously you can't tax it online because you need the V5 in your name to do that.
And don't forget its an offence to have a vehicle taxed with no insurance.

I guess the only option is to take out full insurance...

When I picked up my donor, I got a months insurance with these people <<Link>> and I used it to buy a tax disk no problems. I drove it around for a month to make sure everything was working well, then stripped it down.

most companies give you 16 days to cancel a policy so just take out a full policy then cancel it. just make sure you can cancel it before you sign up.

I've used day insurance to tax a car before, have a look at the FAQs here http://www.dayinsure.com/faqs.aspx says its down to the post offices discretion
