Stainless steel round bar?
David Jenkins - 4/5/09 at 09:16 PM

I need to get two lengths of stainless steel round bar, 5mm dia x 1 metre long.

Can anyone suggest a place somewhere in South Suffolk/North Essex where I can buy this? There's no point in getting it from a mail-order supplier as they won't usually post anything so long and thin. The nearest Metal Supermarket is in North London, which is 75-odd miles away. Mackays in Cambridge is over-priced and 55 miles away. B&Q only have aluminium or black mild steel in their shops.

Living in an industrial backwater is a PITA...

Have a look on ebay - I'm watching a shop with SS bar stock.

I can't send you the link as ebay is banned here!

What are you making David?

If you could live with studding (M5/M6) you might find that is more available locally.

I get a lot of stuff from this guy http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/STAINLESS-STEEL-ROUND-BAR-ROD-5mm-DIA-900mm-LONG_W0QQitemZ250413418505QQihZ015QQcategoryZ98641QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp1742.m153 .l1262

Good prices, cheap postage and so far I have got everything I have ordered the next day.

Not saying yet!

Studding won't work, as it'll be very visible - it has to be done very neatly, or not at all.

I'm going to ring the local steel supplier today - the price these shops charge, it may be cheaper to buy 5 or 6 metres and cut it to suit my needs. I've always got a use for stuff like that.

Colin - filler rod is something I can investigate - cheers!

UPDATE!

Found a supplier on e-bay that may be ok - not sure what the ISO grade is though. Ideally I want 303 (easy machining) but anything would do at a pinch.
