Some ~2mm steel plate in the Reading area
garyo - 27/8/09 at 09:39 AM

I need to make a gearbox mount/bracket and only have either 4mm or 1mm mild steel plate. It's tempting to chance my arm with 1mm but could really do with more like 2mm - I only need something like 12cm x 25cm - does anyone have an off cut they'd like some beer tokens for?

Cheers

Gary

why not use two lengths of 1mm?

Although i'd suggest 2mm does seem a bit thin, considering the size required i'd just use 4mm.

i would use 3mm for gearbox mounts. if 4mm is what you have, go with that

You're right, of course, I could use the 4mm and there's no significant weight penalty, it's just a pain to work with when it comes to filing and making holes - it's not a particularly simple shape I'm trying to make.

I don't fancy doubling up the 1mm sheet, but it's an option.

Now I think about it - Doesn't B+Q normally have a rack of overpriced metal?

Yup. But don't think they do anything that thick.....

just checked- accourding to their website B+Q do max thickness 1mm....

If you're not in a hurry, I'll have a check when I get home at the weekend...

If you are in a hurry, I got some cheap offcuts from an engineering place off Richfield avenue - would probably avoid that are this weekend, though (right by the festival)

Hi Steve,

I'm not in a particular rush, so if you can find something that'd be great!

Cheers

B&Q wanted 45 quid for a metre by half metre piece.

i laughed and walked away!
