WTD or Recommend a MIG welder...
StevieB - 26/9/09 at 08:46 PM

I figured it was about time I had a welder - now that I've actually finished my build but have loads of ideas for improvements/new projects...

So, I'm after either a second hand one or a recommendation for something half decent at a reasonable price (no figure in mind, but just needs to be something that would cope with wishbone/chassis fabrication etc.)

I always reccomend the model I have, as we all do I suppose. I have a giant 195 amp, bought new 3 months ago for ONLY £139, not a sale price or a special o0ffer, the guy sells them on ebay. Mine only has 4 power settings and I would say that it was worth the extra £25 and buying the model he sells with 6 settings. He's located in Leicester and does delivery for £15. No problems with mine at all.

Funny that, just spent the last hour or so trawling round the web looking for the best buy..

Portamig from Weldequip on the mig welding forum??

Coozer.

I bought an old Clarke.
It only takes a spool the size of an oil drum and all the wiring is point to point like a 1960s Marshall 100 watt valve head.

I think I love it. I've welded 1mm stainless and 3mm mild with it.

If you're spending new money, the Portamig is well respected.

^^ Second PortaMig - Excellent piece of equipment. HAd a SIP 180 before and it was not worth £10 let alone what I paid for it.

I have one, it wasn't cheap, but f**k me was it worth it. I laid down a kilo of wire the other day, and it didn't make a sh1ts worth of difference to the machine.

BUT - you must also factor in the cost of gas. I have a 30l bottle of Argoshield light, not cheap, but worth it, especially when compared to those sodastream bottles sold by machine mart and others

I bought a Kemppi Minarcmig 180, it's a tiny thing and welds beautifully. I don't do as much welding as I used to and it is ideally suited to what I do use it for, I don't get a hernia putting it in the car boot.

I agree - I have a Airproducts contract for a BIG Bottle of CO2 makes all the difference. Thoes "sodasteam" sizew bottles only last about 1hour if that.
