Pinto oil sump shortened or not (steel only)
antwan - 28/11/09 at 08:26 PM

Hi people, title says it all. I have a sump that has been badly modified and I get oil starvation.

Im in the warrington area.
Either shortened or standard and I will shorten.

any pictures of the one that is causing the problem we may be able to suggest how to sort it out.

No pics saved unfortunately. The pick up area has been shortened but to retain capacity, the forward section has been depended so all the oil rushes into the front section. There is a baffle over the top of this front section to allow oil back down but there are far too many large holes and it does naff all.
I would really like to try and modify my own as its all about the tinkering!

To stop the oil rushing to the front i put a 3in open s/steel hinge across that way it can flow back to the pickup
And one more thing on your old sump how big is the gap between the sump floor and the pick up pipe you want 8-10mm
ps i have modifide 4 or sumps this way for pintos

Stand to be corrected but i thought the pickup had to be closer than 8-10mm more like 4-5mm.
I would be interested in a consensus as i have an expensive 2.1 build nearing completion, the original short sump has about 3mm clearance and i need to mod a Cosworth pickup pipe to fit this sump.
So i can build in the correct clearance as required.

Hi all just to cover my self before modifying sump do this

leave the pick up pipe on the engine put tape on the filter then a blob of blutack re fit the sump / remove the sump and see what size [thick ] the blutack is i would suggest you modify your sump the same as original by FORD I cant see you getting it wrong that way
All the best Jacko
ps i have a 2.1 pinto too
and i hope yours goes as good as mine

Thanks chaps! Looking at the set up which is currently on the car, I have measured the gap at more like the 5mm mark. Either the existing sump mod is craaap or my brakes are fabulous, hmmm braking hard does make my face ache!
Track day is looming, I cant wait. Thanks again all.
