pekwah1 - 25/8/10 at 05:02 PM

Hi Guys,

If anyone knows of anyone selling a 1600 crossflow, please let me know!

Preferably somewhere travelable from Gatwick (not on a plane!).

Regards,
Andy

I have a block , crank, rods etc in Cambridge if it's any help

pekwah1 - 25/8/10 at 09:06 PM

well it depends, not knowing much about the xflows, are the blocks and heads both different on the 1300 and 1600? for example, on an old school golf, the only difference between a 1.8 and 2.0 was the bottom end....

I've got a complete (but of unknown quality!) 1600 xflow. I'm in Handcross on the A23. Come and have a look!

I Will !!

pekwah1 - 25/8/10 at 09:46 PM

steve, nice that you're looking for one also, but as i started the thread i might ask first dibs on looking at this, jon, i'll give you a u2u.

steve m - 25/8/10 at 09:51 PM

Of coarse, but can you get to handcross before me ??

Only joking,

my car and engine is fine, but i do have a rather knackerd 1691 engine in my garage
that needs a new block
and as i only manage between 1k-2k on each engine before i mash them, a spare one would be cool

Can some please explain what I am missing when it comes to the cross flow engine? My locost has a 1.6 cross flow in it and I can see the benifits from being a rather simple engine to set up and get running but thats about it. The power to weight ratio seems to go against the hole kit car ethous.

It is a very old-fashioned engine, without a doubt.

The pros are:
* It's physically very small, compared to later OHC engines.
* It's easy to maintain - I've had mine completely stripped down and rebuilt it myself.
* It gives it's power in a nice way, with a nice noise!
* There are many tuning parts available, and many people who know how to do it.
* It falls into the kindest category for the IVA and MOT - the first has fairly easy targets, and the latter is just "no visible smoke".

the cons are:
* It is old-fashioned - unless you spend big money a bog-standard Zetec will give more BHP.
* You will use oil - either dripping from the bottom, or past the rings. This is an exaggeration - slightly!
* MPG will never match a more modern engine, unless you spend big money on fuel-injection etc.

I like my x-flow - I like its noise, etc - but when it needs money spent on it I'll get a more modern engine.

A mate of mine has a several 1600 blocks, cranks and some rods.

He used to race and has now retired.
I have asked him not to scrap them, as someone on here might be interested.

I dont think he is looking for a great deal of money, more so wants the space!

All located just outside Cambridge, if anyone is interested.

steve m - 26/8/10 at 10:14 AM

Well, at the right price i coud be interested in a couple of xflows

A standard 1600 xflow in a locost gives pretty good performance, and a stage 3 1691 is MUCH quicker

As Dave Jenkins said, they are cheap, very easy to work on, not complicated, and very small in comparison to any modern engine (except bec)
also to totally rebuild one with new bearings piston rings gskets etc is about £200.
I doubt any modern engine is below 1k

regards

Steve

Sorry steve, the engine is now mine!

Jon it was great to meet you, hope you start making some proper progress on your car... You have all the tools and the workspace, and the literature, and the spares, but if you ever need anything....!

Pezza - 26/8/10 at 08:05 PM

Pekwah, if you ever need crossflow parts or complete engines there is a place not far from us.
Down Wimlands road off the 264, go past the frog and nightgown and there is a place that specialises in mk1 and mk2 escorts called escort - tec
http://www.escort-tec.co.uk/

They've got masses of stuff quite often got big valve heads and the like kicking around if you go for a chat.

pekwah1 - 26/8/10 at 08:07 PM

cheers pezza, i'll check them out.
where abouts in horsham are you? i've been having a look to see if there's any others around...

Pezza - 26/8/10 at 08:17 PM

I've moved just down the road to Faygate now, just behind the Holmbush inn pub Before that I was off Pondtail road, then up near littlehaven.
There is a few builders/owners round here and Crawley too.
Mine's being built at my parents place in Crawley as my garage houses my old Opel Manta.
Only taken 5 years so far lol

*edit* I see you know Rachel too lol

Chaps / chapesses, I don't know if people are still on the look out for a x-flow but my 1300GT will be up for sale within the next 3 months as I am going Zetec.

Its a great engine for what it is and has been built from te crank up 1500 miles ago. Spec is

681 block
+90 pistons
Hardened guides
A3 cam
32/36 Twin Choke (water cooled) Webber

Don't know what it's worth but happy to discuss if someone has a need.
