WTD Turbocharger

Does anyone have a turbo kicking about that they nolonger need? Ideally I need something with no internal wastegate. Reasonably larger exhuast side would be good. something like a T3 T4 hybrid. Must have boltable flanges on the turbine side.

I have finally given in after 4 years of internal nagging... Going to build a twin spool turboshaft engine :-)

Look for a small lorry turbo, back in the 80s my brother and I experimented with gas turbines built from turbos and had some success with a turbo from a lorry that had angular contact ball bearings rather than a hydrostatic sleeve type bearing.
We used some stainless tube and elbows from the scrapyard along with a pump and burner nozzle from an old oil fired boiler and had a total loss gravity fed lube system. Amazingly it ran to the extent of being self sustaining but we never got any further with it to create any power.
I would love to find some time to have another play with turbines sometime but have to many other projects I should be getting on with.
Paul

Hi Paul.

I was actually looking for something with hydrostatic bearings because I am lead to believe they run better at the high RPMs I expect in the turbine. (Up to 100,000RPM).

My plan was to build a pumped high pressure oil system with cooler etc to handle the bearings. The tricky part is designing the burner so you get a good even burn. My plan is to use a high pressure pump and an evaporator system so I can run it on diesel fuel. Once I get the gas generator side of things sorted the plan is then to fabricate my own power turbine to use the exhaust gasses to do something useful.... not sure what yet, but the point is to put into practice some of the stuff I have learned and use it as a tool to learn more stuff... :-)

A massive lorry turbo would be nice, but the bigger turbo you use the larger pipes/pumps etc I will need and it will make the whole thing too expensive... A standard hibred car turbo would do the job in my budget hopefully.

i have got a t25 kicking about. it needs an oil seal on the exhaust side but its perfectly serviceable.

ive got a schwitzer truck turbo waiting in the garage for doing a simple thrust + reheat engine. check out my mates website www.jetpower.co.uk, loads of good info of his DIY jetkart. there is a guy in america who did a twinshaft kart, theres some videos of him racing a ferrari floating around youtube.

Do you know what the A/R for the compressor and turbine is? And any pics? I just googled T25 and there seem to be numerous varients with different configurations. :-)

It's not utilising the exhaust gasses but......

That is the best thing I have ever seen!

a big holset is what you need . a Hx35 can use 3 inch plumbing , they are also catered for in the aftermarket.

you not going to find many car type turbos without wastegates , but you can blank them off easy enough.

oh yeah the holset will be more efficient too , and be able to run 30 psi too .

not sure its off a saab 9000.

i must apologise though as i misread your first post. the turbo i have has an internal waste gate

Hi Ash.

The internal wastegate might not actually be a massive issue. The A/R numbers are usually cast onto the housings.
