My Ebay finger is twitching- advice please!

I don't know too much about landys. Anyone who knows better want to comment on this lovely thing
Anything I should be worried about? I think it may still be registered as a a 4 cylinder.

Utterly revolting wheels and a dubious colour, but it looks very tidy and a galvanised chassis will prevent the kind of rot that would embarrass a 1970's Alfa.

Galv Chassis and parabolic springs = Very good. (about £1500 in those two components alone)
What you dont know is how much filler is supporting the bulkhead. ie has it been painted over etc.

Its not historic tax, so nothing to lose there by the wrong engine, or non std springs etc.

I would keep the V8, and LPG it. That way you would get cheaper running and retain the V8 burble.
A good V8 should do 18mpg, a good 2.2l petrol will do 15mpg. factor in LPG and its more like 30mpg cost wise.

Check the bulkhead carefully, as these are a pain to change, but not impossible. Just a lot to take off to get it all free!

If a Landy is what you want, that one looks fairly good, the Galv Chassis is worth a grand on its own. (Mine as £1800 fitted).

I recon that ought to go between £2K and £3K, maybe even more.

PS... As its a series Landy wid no Power steering, you will develop arm muscles like a Female Russian Shot Putter!
As for the Wandering steering thats normal, in an old landy. There are something like 13 joints in the steering system, and a steering box as well.

What you do is take a more relaxed steering mode, and just gently tease it back in the other direction when you get too far to one side.
Trying to keep a dead straight line is near impossible, dont try, and just resort to a gentle meandering. Its easy and less stressful.
Now that I have mentioned that, you will notice older landy's meandering up the road. Follow one for a few miles and you will see what I mean. Thats any Leaf sprung job, ie anything before 1982.

Landys are great, you can fix most things with a 4Lb club hammer and a bread knife!
Easy, simple, and plenty of room to get at bits.
Downside is parts tend to be big and heavy.

Oh.. dont take it to a garage to be repaired... they will charge you a fortune, and buy green box parts etc.. Home maintenance, and a 1960's style maintenance programe is the order of the day.

I've had 5 Landys over the years and loved them all. Now I'm retired I cant afford the fuel bill anymore.


EDIT... That looks like a Series 3 box, which are ALL synchro, but not as strong as a Series 2 /2a box. I would want a S2/2A box on a V8, especially if you are going to thrash / offroad it. Other than that for light on road dutyies a S3 box should be OK, but dont expect it to last forever.

I bet it doesn't make reserve. The work he's put into it with the chassis alone he'll want £4000 for it at least. You will struggle to get double figure mpg out of any petrol Land Rover in my experience no matter what anyone claims for them. A friend of mine just put a 200tdi in his IIA for that reason.

thanks for all the input guys. not too bothered about fuel mileage. I'm watching with interest but finances at the moment mean there isn't a lot of wiggle room, especially if I can't get rid of my other projects

I used to get 20 on a long run on my 2a, it was petrol, but would only do about 17 on short runs. Have taken a V8 to the Mull of Kintyre and returned 23 as well. So there are some that can hit the 20's

As you say the chassis is the best bit,...

I hate to be the one that reigns/rains on your parade (?), but your other projects are worth doing...

Unless of course, you know something that might keep you too busy for them but ok for the Landy

since losing the company car im after something interesting for the local commute Steve.
I fancy something different to the MGzr 160 and more useful than a 205 rally car project

All like that, its because of the height, load it up and the wheel moves backwards.

having owned leaf sprung and coil sprung I would leave anything on cart springs alone, bloody hard work!

hmm, as much as i wanted to paint one a similar colour, now i've seen it that looks horrible
the wheels don't help either. it somehow looks like a sort of kit type landy. like those things that used to be on ebay and posted on here, think there was a mini pickup someone made themselves or something? and none of it looked right at all

galvanised chassis is nice though
