Tow bar and Electrics for SEAT Altea 1.6
Hi,
Anyone know where I can get a tow bar and 7 pin electric kit for a SEAT Altea at a decent price? I can get the mechanicals from Halfords easy enough
but the electrics are horrendously expensive as it is multiplex wiring apparently.
Can anyone explain what the deal is with multiplex wiring? I made my own wiring loom for my Locost so I'd like to think I could build a relay
insulated loom for the tow bar. Any advice welcome.

ps. You can really help me out here as my wife is nagging big time for me to fit a tow bar so she can transport the kids' bikes more easily. We
already have a Thule tow bar fitting bike rack you see but can no longer use it since we got rid of our previous car.

Hmm, looks promising. I actually used to work with CAN bus protocols when I designed engine management systems at Lucas Automotive Electronics back in
the mid 90's.
Not much info shown on that site - what makes you think this is what the Altea needs if you don't mind me asking? I certainly don't mind
spending £22.75 on the CAN relay and then making my own loom if that's what is required.
Any further info most welcome.

Edit: I see the same website has a "Dedicated Wiring" loom for the Altea for £115.50 which looks to be pretty much plug 'n'
go. This is certainly cheaper than the £200 odd quid which Halfords quoted me and might be worth getting. By the time I add up the cost of the
connectors and the CAN relay and wire, it's going to be over £50 anyway and will probably take me 4 or 5 hours to put it together.

I dont know how it all works but when I bought my altea I had a tow bar fitted by seat as at that time no one else was manufacturing one. I was told
that the ecu would reject any wiring not done correctly. This statement was backed up by the fact that the reversing light bulb cannot be changed for
a larger wattage bulb [hardly illuminates] as the ecu sees this as a fault and displays a light out warning symbol. Also the rear side lights and
brake lights use the same 21w bulb, presumably low volts for the side light then full 12v for the brake lights.
