Early MX5 and put the spare £1000 in the bank - then buy it off him as your next donor in a couple of years!
Or the cheapest car I ever ran was an old (G reg) 1.0 polo (more like a 'lupo' or 'fox' now I guess). Parts were easily
available and pretty cheap(145/70/13 tyres at £12.95 inc valves and fitting/balance!), insurance and road tax low. I drove mine 86k(started with 90k
on the clock) over 4 years and total insurance/road tax and maintenance came to £1500 for the whole period - including having a new clutch fitted.
Regards
Hugh

Dear me, theres me thinking a GOOD car should cost no more than £999 and a cheap run around no more than £150.
I always factor the 30% insurance cost into the equation as well.

£2500+insurance+tax+fuel+MOT/Servicing+tyres+unexpected costs
for 4 miles! He could walk to and from work and still get back home faster than I do! .
Tell the lazy bugger to get a £500 road bike and he'll do that journey in 15 minutes.

I'll second that. 3 or 4 hundred quid gets a servicable car
