I tested both V70 D5's and 330/530ds, I ended up getting a 330d as the BMW engine and auto box were far superior in the Beemer. The auto box in the Volvo was particularly crap, it seemed like it was a petrol gearbox badly bogded onto a Diesel engine without being set-up to use the torque and rev band of the D5. I did prefer the interior of the Volvo though.

for reliability the D5's of that era are very strong! i have an s60 d5 auto, and although i do agree the gearbox is not the smoothest, its still a very good ride, im getting good mpg, tows superbly well, very quick and the 5 pot actually sounds good when revved! for the price i couldnt ask for more

If you want decent reliability then without any doubt the Volvo is the one to go for.
