Land Rover Series 3 Gearbox wanted

I have just made a foray into Land Rovers having recently acquired a '59 Series 2 with quite a bit of Series 3 upgrading including the gearbox which is absolutely shot.

So if anyone has a serviceable Series 3 box they would like to sell me, I'd be very pleased to hear from them.

With many thanks

John

Absolutely shot?

New bearings and seals are cheap enough for these.

Verify as the top bolt can be either 12 o,clock or two bolts at 5 to 1 when you source a spare.

Regards Mark

Thank you for your reply Mark.

All I can tell you about the box is that it ticks in first and reverse indicating a tooth missing, no synchro on second and it also slips out of second. I'd prefer not to mess about trying to repair it. I'd rather fit another better one if possible as the price of a quality recon unit is a lot of money.

Hmm no syncro on second is a series II/IIA box as standard, are you sure it's a series III as these have syncro on second as well.
They are similar, the earlier boxes have an external hydraulic clutch with the slave cylinder vertical in a steel mounting, series III has a more modern arrangement with the slave cylinder horizontal working an arm within the bell housing.
Both swappable but you will need a different slave cylinder and flex, also may need to replace the clutch cover as well – it’s been a few years!

Regards Mark

It is definitely a Series 3 box Mark, it is just worn out.
