Mild steel

My local steel stockholder ( 100 yards away ) takes my order list, promises to phone with a costing, but never does.

I need to fabricate replacement engine mounts so I need the following:

2 off 8.0cm x 6.5 cm 3.0mm thick plates

2 off 9.5 cm x 8.5 cm 5.0mm thick plates

1 off 1.0 m 3.0 or 4.0 cm square box section, say 3mm wall min.

Can you supply ? Will pick up anywhere within 1 hour from North London or pay postage.

edit to correct minor mistake - only out by a factor of 10

For small amounts like that I've found ebay prety good, can normally get exactly what you want (or damn close) for not a massive premium.

That can't be right? 3mm wall thickness would be at least 6mm square surely?

Yup, that's what I was going to say. Head out to the Metal Supermarket @ Park Royal.

Another option is to go into said steel stockests, have them rummage in there scrap bin, and then give them a tenner. In that sort of quanity they are not going to be interested in pricing it up properly I wouldnt have thought, unless there not very busy.

That's what I was hoping
At least, if I go to Park Royal ( thanks Ben + Stu) I can get a coffee at the Ace Cafe on the way back

Got my engine mount materials from these guys

http://myworld.ebay.co.uk/steel2go/?_trksid=p4340.l2559

Great service, gave multiple discounts on postage, then when they weighed it up and sent it off, they even refunded me the extra £1 something they had overcharged!

For that amount of plate, try doing a google search for a local steel fabricator. Thats what I did for my engine mounts and I picked up more than I needed from their off cuts bin for a contribution to their charity collection box. The one I used was in Derby, so not much use to you though.

Yeah for small lots a stockholder wont want to know about pricing up, going in on a Saturday morning is the way to go. I made a stainless exhaust for my van recently, had the pipe but needed metal for the flange at the front & the hanger brackets, so 1.5m of 12mm rod & 75x100mm 8mm plate. Lad has a quick look about & says gizza fiver mate!

Very pleased to say Acton Metalsupermarkets supplied exactly what I wanted. Plates ready cut to size.
£ 14.00 for the two sides - not at all expensive. In and out in 15 mins
