
i wanted to have a go at porting the head of the pinto im rebuilding, am i right in thinking that i die grinder is the tool i need to do it with,
is this any good?

The right-angle one is no good for porting as it wont reach very far - I had one of the other's till it fell apart (didnt take long.....)
You will need a BIG compressor for either one - the heavy duty die grinder I have (£15 from a kit-car show) empties the tank in about 10 seconds 
And porting a pinto head , you will be grinding for about three days 
I've realised that you're better off going electric if you haven't got the mother of all compressors (and if i'd realised a few years ago i'd be a few pounds better off).
Spend the Extra and get GOOD carbide milling bits for the die grinder, will help in the long run and the job will go quicker.
The "die grinder" grinding stones you get with the small electric ones just fall apart IMHO
When i ported the pinto head i used a B&Q own brand dremel with extension and carbide tips worked well, i can find the supplier for the tips if you like as the the stone things dont last long.

A drill flexible extension is as good as anything.
Alex - you are welcome to borrow my die grinder set (its an Aldi special..). it sounds like a trip to the dentists, but it does the job!

i do porting and polishing and i have seen loads of guys diy porting and take it on the rolling road and have lost 10+ bhp dont go mad just clean it
up and smoth it off a bit ,there a lot of talk abou whether to polish or not ,remember to widen you exhast gasket.

dave vizzards book says not to bother with polishing as there is no significant gain in air flow into the cylinder
I used to buy Fast Car before it went chavvie (circa 1992) and they used to work on the pinto quite a bit.
They always said the ports were way too big as standard and the cheapest mod was to just cut the valves so they looked like a 'penny on a
stick'. I used an angle grinder and a B&D drill.
Leave the ports rough otherwise any fuel that drops out of the air-flow will just get sucked in raw and cause rough running.
Dave Vizards book would be a great addition to any pinto owners library.
I followed some of his DIY mods on my Capri 1.6GL and was suprised by the difference they made..
visard also said that 1600 heads are better to tweek than 2 l heads because of ports thats unless you can get hold off a 1.3 head but them are rare
