NTDWM Mountney original lockable snap-off boss
After reading the recent post by Bi22le regarding his quick-release boss coming loose in motion (glad you're ok, btw!) I sent my new Mountney
quick-release boss back as I felt is was cheaply made and not really suitable for the job.
I resumed my search for the original Mountney snap-off (twin pin AND lockable) boss, which is now no longer made. Spent 2 whole days at work making
phone calls, but no-one has got any in stock or can get hold of any. There were 2 listings on eBay that showed them with 148 in stock (lkperformance,
I think) but having phoned them they told me the listings should have been removed - still hasn't been done, if someone wants to drop eBay a
gentle reminder!
I purchased one that cropped up on the sly earlier this week
HERE, and am very happy with it.
It's secure, safe, and really looks the part and does the job.
So, in my search, I also found another one up for grabs on the 'Bay -
this one!. Absolutely NTDWM, and even
if you binned the Mini boss, you could still get a bargain. These retailed for £150 when available, and are the dogs.
*Apologies if I've shot anyone in the foot here who was watching this, just thought people might like the opportunity after recent events!*

Stupid question probably, but I've never really understood the whole removeable boss thing and get confused when people seem to be welding
things to this and that etc. etc.
I have a Sierra colum and a Sparco wheel and column from Raldes.
By migrating the slip ring from the Sierra wheel to the Sparco boss I was able to keep the centre push horn.
Can you use a horn with these? Presumably not! Or do the horn switches make contacts when the wheel is attached? And the slip ring's on the new
boss?
Cheers,
James

I have one of the snap off things and the horn push works. It has a couple of contacts that make the circuit when the thing is attached.

The adaptor sits in between the boss and steering wheel, and the connectors go from the horn puch in the centre of the wheel to 2 protruding metallic
nipples (no jokes, please!) which engage with adaptors on the mounting plate face. As the snap-off section can only fit in one position, they are
guaranteed to make contact.
As for getting spare keys or lock, I would try Mountney direct. Or, if you've still got the original paperwork and made a note of numbers
stamped on either of the 2 keys provided, Mountney may have the file on record and be able to have some more keys made up on your behalf. Truthfully,
I wouldn't hold my breath as they're no longer produced, but keep hunting around as odder things have been known to turn up!

As I expected
quote:
Im afraid that is not possible as we have discontinued the item and have none left in stock.
We do do a replacement called a MLO1 if you wish to purchase a new one from 1 of our suppliers.
Still, post IVA it'll be fine.

Word of warning, DON'T get the new MLO1 quick release boss - it's cheap, nasty, and not lockable (ie. could come loose when driving).
The first one that came for me the locking pin wouldn't move out and hold the two pieces together, the second one the two segments
wouldn't sit correctly (the inner part wouldn't seat squarely), and I got so fed up that I sent the third one back without even trying it.

I saw the pictures on demonthieves, came to the conclusion it was a low budget lump of crap.

HA! got it.
there's (at least in the one I have) no actual lock.
there's basically an extended handcuff key type thing, that goes through the wheel section of the QR, into the boss section, and locks it by
virtue of being a largish lump of metal stuck in there.
As such, it should be pretty easy to bodge a new one.
If anyone can photo/take dimensions of their key I'd appreciate it.
Cheers.

You'll need a sierra steerig column boss, just make sure it's either the collapsable one or your column's collapsable for IVA.
Mountney make a solid boss, but not callapsable - I've got a Momo boss that I'm going to have to drill and tap as hole spacing is
different.
Basically, the snap-off part sits in between the boss and steering wheel. Absolute piece of pi55 to fit, just add bolts! (already included in your
case)
Worst case scenario, u2u me with any questions!
