Engine Change Required
The Pinto engine in my Tiger Avon committed suicide (or was it murder!!)at Frank's charity track day at Blyton yesterday (great day again up to
that point though) either way there is now a 2" hole in the block at the side of number 2 cylinder, I've not looked inside yet

Anyway now need to change the engine so am considering the following options
1. Bike engine conversion - car is only used for track days and needs to be quicker, like the idea of a sequential gearbox too. Is the conversion a
difficult one? Im not bad with a spanner, buil the car and later fitted megajolt, uprated cam and bike carbs etc to the pinto. Not looking to turbo or
for outrageous bhp, which is the bike engine to go for.
2. Zetec or Duratec
3. Mazda MX5- I have a 04 plate with a 1600 engine which has the common chassis rail and sill corrosion issues. I could pull the engine out of that
but am concerned the power won't be there. Will the engine fit a Tiger Avon, does it mate to a type 9 gearbox or would it be better to use the
Mazda box. Is the 1.6 mx5 tunable to get decent track performance.
4. Buy another block and build another Pinto engine
5. Any other suggestions for suitable alternative engines
Any views or advice welcome

Duratec from an ST150 is fairly easy to get to 200bhp on standard internals. Think the exhaust will be on the same side too for bodywork.

The zetec se has the exhaust on the same side as the pinto and duratec, small and very light, arp bolts and had springs allows it to rev to over 8k.
1.6 is the easiest fit and with bike carbs makes 145hp but needs bespoke bellhousing to mate to type 9 (so does duratec). 1.7 puma engine gives a bit
more but needs spigot bearing sorting anfpd vct controlling.
Zetec has the exhaust on the other side but a 2.0l blacktop will bolt straight to the type 9 and reuse your bike carbs and mj it should make 165hp
with everything stock, will be smoother and more economical than your pinto.
IMO bike engine cars need to be built from the start as you need to build lightness in, difficult to loose weight once built. You will need to change
you diff if going bike engine, needs something around 3-3.2:1.
Other usual swaps are the Vauxhall xe, Honda S2000 (big bucks), something different include the Mazda Klde v6 and the Nissan 200sx turbo.

Need to use the zetec flywheel sensor (the pickup is from the flywheel,so very neat ) and obviously us ete bike TPS or Map (whatever you have), and a
new set of numbers in the table.....
Even I managed it!

I had a 2.0l silvertop with the Chester sports cars bike carb kit on it. Megajolt plus manifold plus rejettted zx6r carbs. Ran like a dream. No reason
it would not work on a duratec either. As said, use the zetec crank sensor (in the block and reads the back of the flywheel, 36-1 pattern), may need
to recalibrate or transfer over you temp sensors, new map for ignition (must be plenty about) rejet the carbs, iirc 1.6mm is a good starting point.
Remember to add a spigot bearing (std 22mm Ford item) to the zetec, on the silvertop 2.0l you can use the 1.8l flywheel, saves about 2kg, may need to
look at plumbing and may need a shallower sump. Blacktop need the water pump sorting (google will throw up loads of info) and silvertop need early 1.6
non ac water pump.

yes megajolt will run zetec on carbs i have got a map some where if you have the original cd that came with the megajolt it will have a very good map
on there for the zetec
yes it was a cracking day at blyton shame my car couldnt be there i had to borrow my mates car
sorry you had to end the day with a blown engine

Or ecoboost. Bomb-proof and tiny, but making great power. SBD are getting over 300bhp with a turbo, and STOCK INTERNALS.

Yes but have you seen the price. 4400 just for an ecu and wiring loom to run at 227 bhp. to get the 300bhp spec is over 6k!!!
To put that in perspective you can get a brand new 2.0 ecoboost crate engine and everything to make it run ready mapped for 5k. Or do as I have and
use the controls pack with a used 2.0 ecoboost for around 3k. 252bhp and 290lbs ft out the box.

i was running my st170 on zx9 carbs megajolt ignition and mtech vvt controller it was awsome
i am now running fuel injection and megasquirt ecu personally the carbs were far better than the fuel injection

Same block and bell housing pattern as the zetec se iirc. Has anyone got one of these running on OEM ecu yet?
Would love to put one of these in the back of a Sylva j17, 240hp with just a rechip, filter and exhaust if you start with the 180hp version!

I'd be very surprised if anyone got one running on an oem ecu. Too many can interfaces etc.

But back to the original question. For a track car bike engine every time. I'd look for a 5vy injected R1 engine. Fit a sump baffle plate and do
the breather mod and away you go with a big grin on your face.
Only problem will be finding a good one as they get snapped up quick.

Thanks for the suggestions, lots of food for thought.
Does anyone know of any 'how to' books or guides on fitting bike engines cos it's a completely new ball game to me.
